Channel number. Do you think it influences favorites?

<font color=3333ff>I've always wondered why I chose to enjoy watching ABC news and/or channel 7 as a kid.

I never thought about it and it's not relevant to me in this particular case, but I'm wondering if across the country people tend to base their habits on a channel number.

In another instance, when I was younger I picked 32 over 60 because I liked the number 32 better. But I felt better when 60 switched to 50, and began watching 50 more than I ever did 60.

Even though network programming is the same, I used to watch NBC on WNDU 16 instead of WMAQ 5, probably partly that watching skip is more fun.... but I like 16 better than 5.

Interesting topic, don't you think? I thought of this because if I were a out-of-towner and turned on TV news and saw Andy Shaw reporting with his coarse-voice, looooong stretched-out style of reporting, I'd probably flip to another channel. Of course being that I'm from here, I love Ch 7 news and just write it off as "that's his style."

Most of the time now, I base my chosings on network affiliation....if I go out of town I look for a local news outlet from the ABC and Fox affiliates first. Then might check out the rest.

When it comes to news, I choose who I think does the news better. For the 11am news, I like 7 because of the Mr Food segment, and I like the way Tracy Butler does the weather. Plus familiar faces Linda Yu (who I used to remember from Ch 5 in the early 80's) & Sylvia Perez. Noon news, I like 9 because of Tom Skilling with his weather reports (Jim Ramsey second), health segment, and the lunch break segments. Unfortunately I always have to leave home before the Friday Lunch break segment, when they usually show adopt-a-pet. I always like to see what cats and dogs are up for adoption. Not that I'm going to adopt that pet, but I like to the different pets. When I used to be home, 4pm news was always 7 because I never changed my habits. 5pm was also 7. It used to be 5, but ch 5 keeps changing their staff that I lose interest. If I watch the 6pm news, again ch 7. 9pm news is ch 9, unless there's a game on at that time, then it's 32. 10pm news used to be ch 5, but again I watch ch 7. Ch 7 seems to not change their staff as much as 5 has since Ron Magers & Carol Marin left ch 5, though Carol Marin has since returned to ch. 5, but ch. 5 isn't the same, especially without Ron Magers. As for other programming, it depends on what makes me want to watch a specific program, regardless of channel number. When I was younger, I used to watch ch 60 a lot, because of the rare cartoons that no one else would air. I always liked Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse. Tennessee Tuxedo, Rocky & Bullwinkle, and a few others I liked. I continued to watch 60, then 60 migrated to 50 and continued until it became UPN, then I started watching them less. I rarely watched 66 after the music videos stopped airing on that station. I only started watching 26 more after some good programming came on. 38 seems to be a waste anymore. I didn't care for the programming when it was 24 hour evangalistic christian programming, and don't care for it as Pax today. 20 is mostly programming for those in college, so I don't watch it that much. I'll only watch ch 20 if something strikes my interest. Same thing with ch 11, I'll only watch it if something strikes my interest. As for South Bend stations that come in clearly on some days, for news I'll pick ch 16 because I always thought ch 16 does their news better than ch 22 or ch 28 from South Bend. For Milwaukee, I rarely get 4, 6, or 58, but ch 12 always manages to come in quite a bit and watch their news when ch 12 comes in. But since I haven't watched the other stations' news, I have nothing to compare it with. <P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by dave73 on 08/18/05 01:38 AM.</FONT></P>
 
I think channel 7 is the newscast I watch, not because of the channel number, but because it was the strongest signal when I was a kid. I grew up in Park Forest, by the Will/Cook County line.

Channel 7 was always the strongest, followed by Channel 9 then Channel 11. Channel 5 was so-so. We didn't get a UHF tuner till like 1972. Imagine finding out there was a whole other TV band... LOL

Channel 2 always came in weaker than 32 or 44, so outside of network TV I never watched it.

Channel 32 and 44 rocked in their day. The 70s that is.

For some reason, no matter where I've lived Channel 7 always seemed to come in the best.

For VHF, I have to agree that 7 has the strongest signal. There was one time at my old place that 2 came in better than 5. Currently where I live, 7 & 11 are the strongest VHF channels. 5 has been a problem lately, and 2 is so-so. For UHF, 20 (since the upgrade), 38 (since the relocation to the Sears Tower), 44, 60, & 66 have the strongest signals. 26 is ok some days, crappy other days. 32 has been crappy lately. I don't know if another 32 is trying to interfere, or if the digital channel is interfering since their digital is on the Sears Tower & the analog is on the John Hancock. 50 has always been so-so. 56 isn't great only because I don't have an antenna pointed toward Cedar Lake, and I'm in grade A coverage for them. 62 has been coming in better, but normally the picture looks crappy.
 
Out in Palatine 7 was always the best with 9 behind that. Never watched 11 so I couldn't tell you. 5 was always OK and 2 was unwatchable. As for the "U"s, 32 and 50 were the only ones I really watched not on cable and I think both were OK. Honestly, it's been so long since I've watch TV in Palatine with an antenna I can't remember fully which stations were good and which sucked, though I know in LPTV land, 22 (Palatine), 34 (Arlington Heights) and 13 (Chicago) were the best. Also before TBN's 22 went up, I used to get 22 South Bend all the time.

WOCH-LP already has a CP to switch to 41 (due to WSJV 28 being forced back to their analog channel after the digital period and going ND) and get Class A status. The signal currently won't blanket Arlington Heights, but if the APP on file gets approved to boost power from 25kw to 110kw, then the station will cover Arlington Heights. Unless digital doesn't interfere with adjacent channels, then apps. for 40 & 42 will be denied since 41 will have Class A status.

Well.. 40 is a CP so it was approved. However, if WOCH-LP is gaining CA status they'll get protection from 40. In other words, if 40 causes any interference to 41 they'd be required to find another channel or go off air since they're a translator.
