Channels 4 & 5 Get "Breaking News " Way Wrong on Sunday Night

This past Sunday during the 11 PM news on Channels 4 & 5 [ and maybe 7 which is more likely ] they reported as "BREAKING NEWS" that there had been fatal stabbings in a duplex in Roslindale [ a part of Boston].Both stations reported that ' a mother and son had been stabbed to death and a 12 year old girl had been taken to the hospital with what were described as 'self-inflicted wounds'.

In truth, the brother and sister were stabbed to death and the mother was taken to the hospital with stab wounds which were later not described as 'self-inflicted' but probably were as it was reported the mother was in a state of deep depression.

All this proves the danger of moving on BREAKING NEWS without checking the facts or the sources. If the police gave the wrong information - shame on the police but more shame on Channels 4 & 5 for reporting on-air information which on its face needed to be questioned and investigated BEFORE airing.

Surprised the Globe or the Herald has not picked up on this.

Perhaps, a dime should be dropped to Emily Rooney's "Beat The Press".

All the stations I saw that night were reporting the same, incorrect facts, but also were citing police sources. 5 did talk about the blunder the next day, saying that the woman told police she was the daughter while in the ambulance...which may have lead to the mix up.

Still, no excuse for shoddy reporting. The son was 10 years old or 12 and the mother has to be at least in her her 20's or older and there was a dead little girl there as well. It doesn't add up and the stations should apologize for reporting "Breaking News" without doing the necessary footwork.

Sometimes, being First means sometimes not being Accurate.
I'll take Accurate over First any day.
