Channels/Networks not carried in HD on your cable provider

Looks like Comcast in my area is pretty far behind. It lists C-Span, GSN, Hub, Smithsonian, Sportsman TV, Speed and Sprout as widely available in HD, and my area doesn't have any of those.
All of those except Speed were fairly recent additions here in Seattle. I'd keep checking and keep an eye out, especially as the FS1 launch approaches. I've discovered Comcast added new HD channels only because I tuned to a channel that didn't have a channel there before.

DirectTV is unable to provide my local stations in H.D. I have been told that is impossible but it is very clear, "WHERE AVAILABLE". Now if someone can tell me why they are not available just because I live 300 miles away?

Where do you live? Alaska?

I'm fairly certain Comcast in my area doesn't have any of those in HD, either, with the possible exception of Speed.

The thought of C-SPAN being available in HD at all is just weird, though. Is it simply an up-converted SD, or did they actually switch to HD cameras in the House and Senate chambers?

The majority of the contemporary programming airing on C-SPAN, C-SPAN2, and C-SPAN3 is produced in HD these days, including floor and committee coverage from the House and Senate. However, with regard to the floor proceedings, C-SPAN doesn't actually produce that, mainly because they can't. Aside from special occasions such as the State of the Union or the start of new sessions, the only cameras allowed inside the House and Senate chambers are the ones owned and controlled by the respective legislative bodies. These cameras have actually been in HD since before the C-SPAN networks even began providing HD feeds, which was in the middle of 2010.

If your provider does not carry any of the C-SPAN networks in HD but you are interested in seeing what programming is in HD and what the HD feeds look like, head over to the C-SPAN Video Library. A good amount of the content posted there from the last three years comes from the HD feeds of the networks.

Edit: I forgot to originally include this link to a Tumblr site that has many screencaps taken from floor proceedings aired on C-SPAN HD and C-SPAN2 HD.
