Channels We Need

Will somebody bring ABC Asia Pacific to US cable. Having lived in Australia, I miss Aussie TV and briefly, I was able to watch it on the internet through their live stream (which they no longer carry sadly)

I would like to have a Canadian network like CBC on my cable system instead all the shopping/religious/foreign language channels etc that I'm subjected to. Would it give us a better understanding of how the U.S. is pereived by our neighbor to the north? I dunno sice it's probably not gonna come to fruition.

Up here in the Seattle/Tacoma area, we get the Vancouver CBC-TV affiliate CBUT on cable and if you're lucky enough to live on a hilltop north of Seattle, you can recieve it over the air too. Has a strong following south of the border....

11a - 12p: "The Price Is Right"

Great idea, but CBS would not allow it. (Since you have programming that aired on multiple networks, I am assuming that CBS wouldn't own this network.) Either CBS and/or Fremantle Media won't even let GSN air reruns of The Price is Right. They don't want it to compete with the first-run episodes that air on CBS - especially now that Bob Barker has retired.

Just replace "The Price Is Right" with episodes of "Match Game" and "Tattletales".

Problem solved. :)

Yeah, there you go, then slide TPIR into the 6:30-7:30 slot, followed by the Newlywed Game, and you're right into prime time! That'll definitely work. Now, the money to finance the channel and prove to investors that it's NOT RTN.

I can't take credit for this, but a co-workers suggested it a few years ago: The Awards Channel. Nothing but reruns of old Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes, several country music awards, etc., etc. (Of course, the programming wouldn't include this year's Golden Globes cluster....)

It would be great to have a "Retro" network that shows actual "Classic TV" like another network pretends to do. Beyond that, I think that cable systems in the US should provide a better collection of international channels. Aside from the littany of Spanish language stations, of course.

For example, we should be getting BBC World (as the rest of the world does), CNN International, and channels from other countries such as DW (Germany), TV5 (France), TVE and Antenna 3 (Spain), RTP (Portugal), RTI (Italy), CCTV (China), etc. Before you tell me it is a pipe dream, each of these channels (and others) are on basic analogue cable in places such as Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Venezuela, Brazil and other countries. Is it too much to expect to see them offered on digital cable?

About Canadian channels, we lost CBC Newsworld to Al Gore's gang who turned into something so "hip" that I can't even remember what it is called. But it would be great to be able to get other offerings on satellite like CTV News 24 and Sky News (from the UK) too.

Surely all of the above are more worthwhile than things like the Fox Reality Channel....

It is really sad that Discovery Home is going away, and that Discovery Health Channel is going away too.

According to TV Week magazine, Discovery Health Channel is going to become "OWN -- Oprah Winfrey Network" -- in 2009, and Discovery Home Channel is going to become "Discovery PlanetGreen" in about two months.

Apparently Discovery Health Channel is counting on that they will still have the 70 million homes when they rebrand the channel. Honestly it will be interesting to see if all of the cable TV systems which have DHC will necessarily carry the new channels, and whether Discovery Home Channel with its 35 million homes will be keeping all of their affiliates. As you may recall, American Movie Classics changed their format and lost affiliates who claimed that this was not the channel they had contracted for originally.

Cable TV is getting so homogenized and boring. It is so sad to see how BRAVO in the United States has turned into a channel NBC throws its lameduck shows on after they fail...and no longer has the performing arts direction its counterpart in Canada has. TV Land is also crap.

I didn't even know that there was a Canadian version of Bravo. Looking at http://www.bravo.ca, it certainly does look to be of higher-quality than the US version. But perhaps that's a reflection of the tastes of the masses in Canada versus the US.

What other US cable channels have Canadian counterparts? It would be interesting to make this comparison across the board.

Canada's MuchMoreMusic features "Hogan Knows Best", "Scott Baio is 45 and Single", and "The Salt-N-Pepa Show". In the US, these shows air on VH1. MuchMoreMusic also features programs that aired on A&E (Gene Simmons Family Jewels) and Bravo (Hey Paula) in the US.

(Fortunately, it seems that the original "MuchMusic" still exists and remains music-focused. I assume that this is what VH1 was trying to do with VH1 Mega Hits, but alas, that channel is no more.)

Another note is that for awhile there were 2 health networks: Discovery Health and The Health Network, owned by Fox. DirecTV carried The Health Network at one point before carrying Discovery Health (I believe so though not 100% sure), while Dish never carried The Health Network. The Health Network came before Discovery Health, but Discovery was aggressive to get Discovery Health carried on more systems, typically analog (pre-digital cable). The wider penetration is why it has more households maybe why it was chosen to be converted to OWN, over Fit TV or the other Discover digital cable specialized channels. TLC and Animal Planet (which have equal to better penetration as Disc. Health) were too popular to touch and flip, so it was Discovery Health that was sacrificed to Oprah.

Similar to there being 2 outdoor channels OLN and The Outdoor Channel, though DirecTV was late in carrying the second. Discovery purchased rival The Health Network, and changed it to FitTV, which was purchasing a rival and then narrowing down the focus of the channel (similar to Tech TV becoming merged with G4, though with Comcast buying TechTV they closed the tech cable channel altogether). Now, there won't be any Health network per se, although Discovery Health was leaning towards reality tv anyways. Discovery could revert FitTV back to The Health Network now, though I doubt they'd go back.

Yet somehow there is still 2-3 women only channels, including Oxygen and WE, both which chiefly show reruns and have no special focus other than being for women. Oprah used to own part of Oxygen, which shows Roseanne reruns, actress who is anti Oprah now.

DirecTV carries CCTV-9, which is in English. It's in the 400's and is part of the Total Choice package which most people have. BBC America is there too, but the one I want to see is Al-Jazeera English. It's on the web though. Fascinating to see how they view the US.

Some stuff may be on DirectTV, but I'll take notice when Comcast starts carrying some of these channels on digital.

I agree with you about Al Jazeera (English), it would be great if we had access to it. Many of us may not like the way that they portray stories, but it's enlightening to see how the other side thinks. Certainly worth the few cents a month that it would cost to offer it.

What channel does DirecTV show CCTV-9? I have DirecTV and have the premier pack (all channels including pay TV) and it is not on there....

I miss CBC's Newsworld International. I would love for someone to resurrect this idea. It would be great to see english language news from around the world. CBC, BBC, German television, etc.. I wouldn't mind seeing CCTV's english language service or even Al Jazeera in such a context.

I also think Discovery (or someone) could make a fortune by teaming up with NASA to turn NASA-TV into a real cable channel devoted to space exploration. The Discovery networks run a ton of shows on NASA programs and space in general. If they could combine all that into one channel and beef it up with some of NASA's material, they could make a really good network. Of course, the raw coverage of mission launches, press conferences, etc would also be part of it. But honestly, that's good stuff for space junkies too. Best of all would be to do the whole thing in HD.

CBC Newsworld is still on the air, it just needs someone to see the worth of that channel and distribute it to the U.S as it was previously. I still recall that they aired a lot of "per inquiry" ads in the commercial breaks, as well as some regular advertising.

CCTV's broadcasts to the US are in English.

UPDATE: Apparently DirecTV was ripping me off. When I first subscribed to them I was supposed to get all of the channels...but apparently they installed the wrong dish and the wrong LNBs...

By Friday night I should have China Central Television.....aahhhhhhh-sooooooo! (How politically incorrect was that!) javascript:void(0);
