A question for Boston Radio listeners, what type of "personality" did, does your favorite DJ have? What makes/ made them your "favorite"?
Is it humor, factual knowledge, voice? music that they play/played?
Please share your thoughts

I always liked the "one on one" connection to the audience...some people do this very well. People like to be talked to, not at....and it's always been my approach.

Knowing their vocation is top, but also a very smooth voice, delivering the program is a big plus.

What does the work of the music director have to do with the jock?

What about in the old days when radio was less "programmed" and jocks were given a longer leash to play what they wanted? What about college radio stations where there are no music directors? What about specialty programs where in most cases, the jock IS the music director?

What jocks? Almost every station today is automated and they VT what is in the box.

The O.P. was asking for favorite jocks, past and present.

That's a pretty ignorant comment.

One of my all time favorites was Mark Parenteau when he was on WBCN, played great music had a great voice and he was funny. The first thing I did when I got home from work was turn on the radio, stations that play music without DJ's are WICKED boring.

Someone who has a friendly vibe. They could do anything, play music or host talk shows. Among the best in Boston, past and current, in my book: Larry Glick, Eddie Andelman, Jerry Williams, Steve Fredericks, Bob Kennedy, David Brudnoy, Jess Cain, Carl de Suze, Dave Maynard, Charles Laquidera, Joe Martelle, Andy Moes, Ken Shelton, Mark Parenteau, Loren & Wally, Steve Laveille, Norm Nathan, Charlie Van Dyke, Dale Dorman, J.J. Wright, Karen Blake, Diana Steele, Tom Doyle, Matt Siegel, Billy Costa, J.J. Jeffries, Joel Cash, Arnie Ginsberg, Dick Summer, Bruce Bradley, Steve Martarano, Charlie Jefferds, Jordan Rich, Paula Street, JoJo Kincaide, Shadoe Stevens, Mike Addams, Mike Adams.

hmm.. Jessie Comiskey, Jr Rodigan, Generoso, Teep, Froggy, Fadah P, Anaconda, Ms Jackie, Tragic, Miami, Warlock. DJ Flex. Big Trini. that guy on WATD who plays jazz at 3am

I like for a host to evoke emotion...ANY emotion. Someone like Dan Justin on MAGIC has always made me smile and feel happy because he sounds so happy on the radio (Jackson Blue is another). I usually laugh my behind off at Mike Hsu on WAAF because of his sarcastic-stoner view on life. Lisa Garvey is so knowledgeable about music that I found myself enjoying learning what she shared on the air about any given artist or song, much like Carter Allen. Sometimes Gerry Callahan usually makes me want to punch my speaker in anger (but I usually agree with John Dennis more often than not). There are too many to keep mentioning.

I like this list...pretty much agree with most. I would have to add Larry Justice to it.

My all time favorite DJ ( in the classic defininition of what a DJ was) would be Bruce Bradley. Dave Maynard would be in 2nd place for me.

As far as"radio personalities" go, I would have to say the pre-ranch version of Imus.
