Chargers are on AM only vs. the Cowboys today

IMG_9019.jpeg

Like really? I can’t imagine the Rams ever being happy about being bumped to AM only, especially against the Cowboys (huge fan base in L.A.) No other FMs were available for three or four hours today?

While I am in no position to know the details of the contract with iHeart, it is entirely possible that there are restrictions on which stations can be used for resolving conflicts like these.

For example, I think I can presume with reasonable certainty that none of the Audacy stations can be used in this circumstance. And perhaps there are exclusions for KIIS-FM, KOST and KBIG based on the games being more of an irritant for their regular listeners than the interruption is a benefit.

Sure, Like really! Why not? If you look at the Chargers affiliates list on the Wikipedia site (and that may be out-of-date), the only other FM outlet carrying the team is El Centro's KXO-FM. Frankly, I see nothing wrong with listening to the game on an AM frequency. Oh yeah! I forgot! Generations younger than I think AM is nothing but a dying band! To quote Rex Stout's famous fictional detective, "Phooey!"

IHeartradio’s altergo concert is on Saturday, January 17th. If the Chargers make it to the Divisional Round, it’ll be held the same day/night. Can we expect the same thing?

The Chicago Bears flagship is AM 1000 WMVP, no FM, except an HD2. KFI is a 50 KW powerhouse, outperforming the coverage area of any FM!
That’s fine and all. I love listening to sports on AM. The point is, 98.7 is their flagship, and they’re not being aired on their flagship station. As it appears the remaining regular season games will be on a different station, on a station other than their flagship.

Since it is apparent none of the posters here actually listen to any L.A. Chargers radio broadcasts:

There are several announcements made during commercial breaks during 2025 game broadcasts that the Chargers "new" flagship radio station for the entire 2025 season is 640 KFI with the occasional game airing on 570 KLAC. There is no mention of 98.7 KYSR - they are no longer involved in any facet of Chargers radio broadcasts.

BTW, since the Sun. 12/21/2025 game involved the Dallas Cowboys, the game was also aired on Dallas Cowboys Compass Media affiliates such as 760 KGB San Diego. (Unsure if there was an L.A. affiliate provided for this particular contest.)

you’re right. All season they’ve been on KFI. Really odd to switch flagships. I’ll sometimes listen via SiriusXM. Didn’t even notice. Sucks because KROQ would be commercial free during Charger broadcast on 98.7.

The question is, why the move to KFI from KYSR? That's what were curious about.

KFI 640 is the Chargers flagship now, which as a Chargers fan in AZ for the night games this time of year, I like with the big power signal they got getting it all the way out here in Goodyear (West Valley). Wouldn't mind assuming the Chargers make the playoffs, they're scheduled for a primetime game.

If L.A. couldn’t handle NFL football on FM, then L.A must really not be a sports market

My take is that the Chargers are lost in a giant sea of sports in LA. It’s like, “oh they play here too”

Seriously, if you count MLS and college football, the LA market has 12 major league sports teams, several entertainment venues and a plethora of things to do. I can think of only two LA teams that drive passion in mass and can dominate the news . The Dodgers and the Lakers. Everything else is just another team, another choice.

Even though it would have carried other Dallas Cowboys games, since KLAA is within 75 miles of Los Angeles, it could not, via league contractual obligations, carry the Cowboys-Chargers game.

IMHO: Just football I believe the LA market does Baseball and Basketball very well.

There was a period not too long ago, where market #2: didn't have a NFL team..It takes multiple generations to build "team" loyaly.

At least the NFL is honest*, it's s all about the money. Teams will move for a better stadium "deal" which in the current scheme is more important that the actual fans in the seats or listening to PBP on radio. IIRC with the NFL TV deal, owners are almost guaranteed a profit even if nobody buys a single ticket or listens to the game.

* I wonder if college football and basketball can keep folks thinking the University of (fill in the blank) is representing their state when a huge percentage of the players are just there for the money or a shot at the NFL, and don't care about the team or what that team is supposed to represent.
