I listened online today, and Doug Palmieri made it sound like Charles had built up a ton of vacation time over the last 20 years that he was unloading it all now.

In the military, we called it "terminal leave". We capped out at 120 days of leave (at 2.5 days/month) and, before separating or retiring, would use it up before heading to civilian life. When I got out, I "cashed in" my remaining leave and got a nice extra check upon separating.
Charles has nearly 25 years in at 'HJY, and an even longer track record in the market. I have to think that he is ill and recovering. After all, isn't he in his late 60s? In addition, I recently heard Doug refer to himself as the "night guy." I hope Charles is back soon.
His twitter acct indicates a neurologist visit in May.
If he's not ill and just using up vaca time then the station should post something on his web page. But if that's the case it's probably a pre-cursor.
A pre-cursor to what? If he is ill - and I would think a neurologist visit indicates as such - then Clear Channel has to follow HIPPA laws and not reveal anything about the illness or the reason why he is out. Moreover, I am sure that CC has a clear medical leave policy.
Either way, I hope that Charles is healthy and that he comes back to continue what has been the best afternoon drive show on a music station in the market.
If he's not ill then then its CC telling him to get the accrued time off the books. When he leaves they'd have to pay him lump sum for it, so it could be a pre cursor to a phase out plan.
The show isn't what it used to be without Laurenti and Troll IMHO. Gotta wonder where the money is coming from to re-up Matty down the road in Medford.
If your scenario is indeed correct, why, after all this time, would Charles still be on the website and Doug still be saying that he is "in for Charles"? CC is not the type of company to drag out these kinds of things. I can't think of another situation in which CC has done a "phase out," and I regularly follow about 20-25 markets. CC's style has always been buy-outs. At WHJJ, isn't that what they did to Arlene about five years ago?
Doug said this afternoon that he has been texting with Charles and that Charles would be back "very soon." Whatever happened to him, this is very good news!
I listened via iHeartRadio...good to hear Charles back on the radio! He said that he had a "near death experience" - some sort of traumatic medical event (he did not specify) while driving along Smith St. He also said that CC policy is not to tell listeners why he was on medical leave. In addition, he starts on Monday. Good news that he is doing better.
