Charleston... 96 Wave

Hmmmmm....20 year history. Best Alternative programmer (Dave Rossi) Best Alternative musicologist (the critic) in the country. Employees who have been there for 10-15-20 years.

Just recognized in the most recent edition of Rolling Stone as a pretty killah Alternative station (Alongside Indie 103 in LA, 91X in San Diego and X96 in SLC)...Id say not only is the rep good...the track record is like no other.

If you land the gig, you will most likely be on board for a long time with quality staff.

Good luck! ;D

I guess until the next round of mass firings, anyways.

Looks like the previous post was written by a staffer, probably Rossi. He has a reputation for being difficult to work with. Management there is known for swinging the axe without rhyme or reason. If you like staying on your toes and never knowing if you might get fired, you'll probably fit in great. And the "Critic" mentioned in the post refers to the guy who used to deliver pizza to the station...one day they decided to make him a d.j. Go figure...

I never quite understood how the critic stayed on the air with his nasally sound. May play well in Wisconsin, where everyone there talks like that, but in Chaaas-ton?

Well, if you have seen the latest trend.....

Not sure what you can say here, but I WILL say "nose-dive " is an appropriate word.

Not only that, I don't think I've seen a 12+ trend this ugly for them in the 8 years I've been aware of them.

Ouch.

Damn, lighten up people. Just trying to give some positive encouragement to a job hunter and you all turn into a bunch of catty b!tches. ::)

Hey, they got written up in RS. 'nuff said.

Which employees have been there that long? Rossi got the boot, was brought back and we all see what's been happening recently.

The Critic - there/gone/back again.

Danny V? Gone.

That crappy morning show that replaces Stern? Gone.

Who are these long term employees you speak of?

Your right Danny V was there for awhile. Even Bam Bam was there for half a dozen years.
Critics years of service total up to over a dozen. Rossi too.

"And we all see what has been happening recently?" what that they are making cash? Everytime I tune in I hear that.

Nip, you have only been aware of them for 8 years...where the hell have you been? Best damn alternative in the country for like 20 years.

I must admit, I am not in Charleston at the moment, and I only moved to SC back in the late 90's, so I heard the last gasps of what many consider their "heydey" and I LOVED 96 Wave back in 98/99....

Then Danny V started playing a lot of sludge rock, and it all seemed over.

But back when they had Cowboy Mouth and Hootie and they were THE station in Chucktown....my only regret was I hadn't moved to Charleston 5-10 years sooner and really got the full Wave experience.

That's why I was asking....I saw the article in RS...then the numbers. Makes you scratch your head a bit.

That's the power of reputation. In the Early to late 1990's, WAVF was a real groundbreaking station.

Today, if you look at the MediaBase hou by hour playlists, you can immediately see why the Arbitron numbers are not where they used to be.

12+? never even look at them. Neither do advertisers.

Playlist? No Slipknot? No Tool? No System Of A Down?
Its not a 12 year olds Alternative Station.

Constantly the the first station to break new music.
Sometimes a year before other stations find out
about it. (example: The Fray.)

Charleston is a unique beachfront city with its own sense
of style. Wave reflects the community.

S. MIKE FOR PREZIDENT OF JAMES ISLAND!!!

Most advertiser never ask for numbers. But the fact is, where The Wave was in the Top 5 12+ pulling 6+ shares on a consistent basis, they are no longer doing so. And its not a statistical blip. The Wave has only about 1/2 the audience it once had in its heyday. Dave was playing way, way, too many obscure library cuts. He seems to have refocused the station again. I give him props for trying something new, but the Wave is just not happening like it used to. WXRY Columbia, I think was on The Fray before The Wave. Not that it really matters whether you "break" a record or not these days...

You missed the main point, which is that WAVF has lost half of its audience in the past 5 years.

As you correctly noted, most local direct don't really look at the numbers, per se, because they don't care about the nuances of a 2.8 versus a 2.5. But most are very concerned about whether a lot of folks are listening. In the case of The Wave, not that many are listening...

Errrr...I never said advertisers dont care about the #s. I implied most advertisers dont care about the 12+. The 12+ is for the monday morning radio QB wanna-be. All the bars and car dealership owners in Chucktown you hear advertised over and over, and broadcast live from everyday, sometimes multiple times a day, are more concerned with the 18-34. Mebbe to 49. My understanding is that the #s in those demos are just as solid as they have ever been. Then advertisers get slightly more personal into the listener demographic...Example: Notice alot of I.O.P. Mt.P and Downtown on there. Im guessing there is a reason for that... Nothing against Cottageville, but not so much.

::)

96 WAVE...Sounds like Charleston.

Southern Avenger is the Robert D. Rayford for a new generation!!!

12+, while not the full story of a station, is directly correlative to the total ## of listeners to the station. To pretend otherwise is to simply spin, spin, spin. The 12+ cannot be dismissed as simply for people doing Monday Morning QB'ing. Theres a lot of information that 12+ can tell you about the market, where the overall audience tastes are going.

The fact is that the WAVF 12+ cume (the total number of bodies listening) is way way down.

96 Wave may have been the sound of Charleston, but now its only the sound of about 2-2.5 share of Charleston. 3+ share of folks have gone away in 5 years. Heck perennial also-ran 98 Rock had them beat a couple of books at one point. So, your perception of 96 Wave is based on what they were, not what the radio listening audience is saying they are now.

12+ is useless.

::)

Spin?

Not staff and not media so I don't know where that comes from.

So tell me more about this 12+ that you speak of.

::)
