Charleston January 2023 ratings

Adult R&B WXST continues to climb and Hip Hop Z93 stays strong. AC WXLY has been inching up as well. No other major differences other than 95 SX being down a whole share. They are now down in the 3's which should be no surprise. The state of CHR is in the pits right now. Also, 98 Rock keeps falling further and further. They are now in the 1's. Over the past year or so, they added alt pop songs from Fallout Boy and Yellowcard. I don't think this bodes well with their playlist ranging from Heart, Five Finger Death Punch, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shinedown and etc. I remember when they were active rock and now hearing classics from Heart mixed in is off putting. Nothing against those songs and artists but it's all over the road. What other changes could they make besides flipping the whole format? Classic rock and classic hits are covered. Their AAA does moderately well. Speaking of classic hits, The Wolf hasn't been setting the world on fire either. Thoughts?

If it weren’t for the morning show, 95.9 would probably be pretty bad off.

I think part of 96.9’s problem is John Boy and Billy. They’ve been attempted on oldies or classic hits stations several times and failed bringing the whole station down. Cumulus recently dropped JBB in Columbia and Myrtle Beach for the syndicated Bob and Sheri show which fits the format. No music in AM drive on a station like this is BAD. I’ve always found it interesting iHeart didn’t put them on Q instead of Bob and Tom.

Magic 107.3 isn’t doing great either.

Star 99.7 is killing Magic 107.3 and has been for some years now. They both have syndicated mornings but Star 99.7 is more tailored for the local Charleston audience especially playing Southern Soul music. Old Skool 92.1 is now in the mix adding a 3rd Urban AC to the market ran by Terry Base.

Z93 wins the Hip Hop audience by default. They don’t even have a night time jock nor weekend mix shows which is standard for urban stations. 99.3 The Box is the competition but that’s a snooze fest. The voiceovers sound extremely weird and the positioning of them being “The Party Station “ with no street presence is hilarious. Plus, Tino Cochino’s syndicated show on an Urban station in the South is beyond out of place and weird.

Once upon a time, Charleston’s radio market was exciting and energized especially the Urban side. Now, it’s cookie cutter at best.
