Charleston radio right now

I know we've been going thru some slow discussion periods right now, so I figured that some new discussions would help it out.

I don't know how 101.7 gets such high ratings with its baffling music mix. I know that it is a Jack format, but they are a unique station. Going from Bruce Springsteen to Lady Antebellum to Tom Jones to Styx to Madonna in half an hour makes it very interesting.

I know Apex programs it locally, because they've added oldies to the mix since 95.9 switched. I know that Jack stations don't usually have personalities, but if they did, they'd get a killer rating. It did work for 99.7, who moved back to 1st.

Impressive ratings for 98 Rock in the fall book, up to a 5.2. They haven't been that high in years. I guess Bubba the Love Sponge worked. Also, uncharted territory for Z-93. Fourth place. Two books ago, they were first by well over a point.

What do you think?

I see where Y102.5 (who hasn't had a true direction in ages) is playing a lot of older stuff and not a lot of songs from the 2000s compared to MY102.5 here in Greenville, also owned by CC. They are clearly trying to battle for the classic hits audience. I think Charleston could stand a real AC station.

I don't like the Adult Hits format, personally. Too varied for my tastes.

That flip at 95.9 made no sense. Hope Kain and Bill have landed on their feet.

Althou country is always my music of choice no matter how watered down it is today, I agree that 95.9's format change was a bad idea since their old format gave them something different (a nice change) in the Charleston market where they could have expanded their listenership and grown. Now their the third station in country and the best they can hope for is to be the second country station as no one is going to knock WEZL 103.5 out of being the number 1 country station in Charleston. I am sure this was done to knock down WEZL's ratings but gee what a big waist of time, money, and a radio station that had something going for it.

Y 102.5, in my opinion, made the transition from Oldies to AC much too fast. Perhaps they are now trying to emphasize their heritage and old brand, which apparently meant more than they realized.

Didn't Y 102.5 have to go the AC format due to Sunny 96.9 picking up the country format when 107.5 left? Even when Sunny 96.9 was in Charleston Y 102.5 was going AC slowly. Currently the sound of Y 102.5 is good.

Yeah, 102.5 was starting to sound kind of AC'ish before Sunny flipped but they were still very classic hits sounding musically. They made the full-blown switch to AC shortly after Sunny flipped. Bad decision, IMO. Ratings were better when they were classic hits.

They still play some newer songs, but very heavy on 70s and 80s lately, especially since 95.9 flipped. I'm wondering if they may try to transition back to classic hits. Wouldn't be unheard of.

I think Y 102.5 can try to be both playing soft AC from the 70s and 80s along with a small amount of todays AC. The current sound of Y to me sounds like how Sunny did.

Also if Apex's country 95.9 doesn't work what format should they flip to? back to classic hits or how about going AC.
