Charleston trends

Charleston's trends just came out today, for March, April, and May, and Z-93 kept its almost two and a half share lead over WEZL.

Big drop for Star 99.7, going down over two shares, with their syndicated morning show.

Good book for WJNI, with that tiny signal, very little beach penetration, getting a 4.6, the highest book ever for that station.

Nice book also for Q104, up to a 3.9. People now know about XLY's use of national personalities, and their drop to a 5.9 may be because of that.

B92 dropping a share is big, but nothing compares to 95SX's drop in ratings. All the way down to a 2 rating, lower than WTMA and Heaven 1390, only .2 above The Bridge, and only .3 above 910 The Team.

That may be the lowest ever rating on the 95.1 frequency, and a major change may be in waiting. Could 95SX surrender the Top 40 crown to B92, and flip to Soft Rock, as they are basically an Adult CHR during the day, with 90's music at Noon every day. Could they go back to a Top 40 targeting the teenage audience, with long music sets, personality and contest driven?

STAR 99.7 has had the syndicated Steve Harvey morning show for a while now. I don't think the ratings dipped because of him.

95sx is down because of B 92, the change to the morning show as he went to The Wolf's new morning show. The sound in the music changed some as they took out the hip hop for awhile as Sunny flipped to The Wolf and Citadel wanted listeners to go over to 95sx. If I would Citadel I would take 95sx and make it Hot AC that way you still get some competion with B 92 and you also get not the young crowd but some may listen. Or they could go and we could have Sunny 95.1 lol.

I would agree, if B92's numbers reflected growth similar to 95SX's losses, but both are wallowing in the mire.

Personally, I think it's because Charleston is an "old" town. Younger people have sat radio, the net, IPods. And they're USING them. The older the demo, the less impact those things have on radio listening.

Go back to before those things were around....96 Wave and 95SX OWNED the town...not to mention whatever young people were tuning into the country stations.

I haven't seen the breakdowns, so this is all supposition....but I think it's a reason for concern for radio.

I think that radio is hurting across the board because the bulk of it is owned by large corporations and the formats are cookie cutter and there is no real local personality like there used to be. I think that because of mp3 players and and IPOD's radio listnership is going to decline and personally, I miss the old days of local AM radio. Here is Columbia during the late 60's and 70's, it was a fun time to be listening.

Demo graphics makes a big difference area to area. I am sure that in the cities that sat radio and I Pods make a large impact on ratings with the younger crowd. Internet radio is probly everywhere from what I have seen but isn't very portable. Out in the country like we are sat radio is used by people who travel a lot beyond local radio stations range, which are in general an older crowd. I Pods here are about 1 in every 100 kids and not used much (my 17 year old daughter and her friends call them the city wanta be kids or stuck up) being second hand I wouldn't know. I guess it depends on what each persons situtaion is and wheather it what they want or not.
