Charleston's 98.9 stunting

Starting today, Charleston's 98.9, WAZS-FM, is changing formats. Last night, the Spanish format (that 980 joined a couple weeks ago) was still on the frequency.

Now, they are stunting, with the call letters WWIK, with an ID after every song. They are continuously playing "Feel Like a Woman" by Shania Twain. There's a few guesses to the format: maybe a third country station? Soft rock? Maybe "Movin"? They dropped to a .6 in the last trend, and think that changing formats will help them. With that poor signal, I don't know what they will do with the frequency.

The question has been answered, as a Facebook group has been made. The new station will be called 98.9 Chick FM, and it will have a women's oriented morning talk show with Janet Walsh (another station for her), and Lori Niks (who used to be on WEZL).

During the rest of the day, it will be a women's oriented AC station.

Here is the link to the Moms in the Morning show from Facebook:

How good of an AC is Y102.5...think they may have enough to go after them decently? I would think that's who they're going after. Anything's going to be tough on that signal.

Oh no. This is starting to remind me of 106.3 WGVC's wretched "Womens Talk" format a few years ago. Charleston has more than enough AC with Chuck, and Y. Now Chick? Sounds like a bad joke. Chuck vs. Chick. Jabar should of stuck with Hot 98.9. That was a fun hip-hop station.

Jabar should've went with Rhythmic or Urban relaunching HOT 98.9. Z93 JAMZ Urban format and STAR 99.7 Urban AC format always seems to sit on top of the ratings. I will give props to Jabar for the Urban Gospel format on GOSPEL 106.3. They've done well since HEAVEN 1390 flipped formats.

Their music mix is a pretty weird mix. They play everything from 70's AC to Chaka Khan to songs from just a couple of years ago. I believe this will be the format, as they have a pretty big group of over 200 members, and several videos on Facebook.

This format is not actually Jabar's format. Jabar sold 98.9 before they flipped to Spanish, over to Kirkman Broadcasting (who also owns four AMs in the Charleston market). This is their 1st FM venture.

It shows, but it does have several advertisers, while the other new stations here only have a few. Their big signal to the NE also helps, as they can get listeners as far N as Myrtle Beach with that signal. A lot of people in that area heard them today.

Hey Guys,

Does “Chick FM have a website, or, better yet, a stream? Can someone please search for one? Thanks.

No they don't, even with this AC format targeted to women 35-45. They do have a Facebook page, but they don't have anything else yet. They will get a website soon.

Is 980AM and 1480AM going to keep the spanish format or will they be sold also? How is Jabar doing with those TV stations that they run. I don't have digital cable so I have never viewed them.

I wonder if the suits at Apex are having a coronary right now...

Chick FM...Chuck FM...one letter difference...kind of similar formats. I have heard of stations suing competitiors for less similar names than that!!!

Then again...this sounds like a stunt to me.

"Chick FM"? That can't be taken seriously!

The station is in a LMA with Jabar, as Ted Byrne is the PD for the station, as five stations are in that building on Markfield Drive.

They are close, as Chick and Chuck do share part of the same format, too. It's just like WSPO and WTMZ competing for the sports crown. WSPO will have the Sertoma Football Classic next week, which WTMZ had last year, but WTMZ still has a lot of the big sports in town (Riverdogs, College of Charleston, Citadel football).

Is WJNI Gospel 106.3 also part of Kirkman now? I was listening and heard Markfield Drive as their new address. Kirkman is located on Markfield Dr.
