Charley Jones question

Someone told me that Charley Jones is the only person to ever beat Mark Davis since he's been on WBAP. Is this true? I wasn't following the ratings back when Charley Jones did mid-days on KRLD.

He came close, and he was KRLD's best chance in doing so,but Charlie prefered the nights personally, and Spears brought in Ernie Brown (his first tour of duty at KRLD) to do mid days. Charlie is a great person.

I really think a lot of Charley Jones. He's one of the very few talk show hosts that I've ever heard who really seems to care about his listeners. It's obvious that he enjoys coming to work each night as well. He's one of the few who can do a talk show without having to act like he's smarter than his listeners. I think that Mark Davis is really bad about doing that.

it seems like so many talk shows now are about creating conflict. Charley, along with the late Glenn Mitchell, stood apart from the pack. It's great when you can listen and get multiple points of view and interesting information without the anger & disrespect that's so common on the airwaves today. I enjoy listening to the talk shows on the CBC from Canada via Sirius for the same reason.

I agree. Charlie is well read and treats his listeners with respect. But please get rid of those new heavy metal bumpers. WEAK and Irritating!

Charley is a top-notch person but nobody at KRLD has ever beaten Mark Davis. Kevin McCarthy at KLIF was number one in that slot for about 2 years before Davis passed him in the ratings.

Charley and Kev Mac, IMHO, have what alot of radio talkers lack: Respect for their audience no matter how much they may disagree. Mark Davis and hosts of his ilk treat anyone who doesnt march to their right leaning ideology as an enemy of the state. I believe they are afraid to take on someone who can actually bring a frank & candid dicussion of the issues.

My friend Mr. Lipson and I have had many discussions about the way talk radio has digressed to conflict, hate, name-calling etc. Let me throw another name from the past....my buddy Ed Busch, who, IMHO, was probably the best at what he did. Sometimes controversial, sometimes humorous, but ALWAYS entertaining ,informative and respectful of his guests and his audience. Whether it was Joey the Mafia Hitman, the transexual and his/her electric cars, city council agendas or just open line, Ed made it worthwhile listening. Much like Charley does these days.

I just wish Ed would get off his lazy ass down there at Cedar Creek and do a daily show. ;D I know I'd listen!

I prefer Tom Snyder to CJ.

Playing both sides of every issue is not interesting talk radio. It's pablum.

I don't need someone to self-appointedly be 'sitting on the fence' "for me", to tell me both sides of the story, as they see it.

My mind is made up, and I just need my side of the story to be talked about. ;D

Thats.... good talk radio. Take a stand, and stick to it!

There --are not-- two equal sides to --every-- topic :p

William F Buckley_Gore Vidal had some interesting debates on the air. Larry King when he had a 4 hour Mutual radio network show on,had even handed discussions. Thats just to name a couple of many. Sorry Rover, there are and will remain 2 sides of an issue:elections, civics,Democrats, Republicans, etc. If you like yelling and one sided conversations, give me your address and I'll ship you my ex-wife.

In politics there are 3 sides: Pro-government control right, Pro-government control left and freedom.

I don't bother with talk radio/TV because they all are arguing for the same thing...government control. The only difference between the R & D is how they want to control you. They all ignore the Constitution unless they can twist it to support their pro-government control position. What is needed are Talk shows with pro-freedom hosts to take the constitutional position on issues. Not a "the government should control 'issue A' this way" or "the government should control 'issue B' that way", but rather the government does not have the constitutional authority to even meddle in this.

They would have a hard time getting guests to appear from the R or D, because they would not be able to defend their positions.....maybe that is why these shows don't exist.

Hahaha. KPLEXCOMPLEX --- That's a great line!

I loved it in the early 70s on "Newstalk 57" when a caller would argue that God doesn't want "negroes"
to go to the same schools as whites...

Ed would reply "Don't quote the Bible to ME, lady...."
