(Charley) Lake Effect Hits Philly

R&R is headlining tonight that Charley Lake from KOOL-FM is off
to classic rocker WMGK Philadelphia as PD, effective February 1.

Of note in their storyline is the reference "Lake was most recently
PD" at KOOL. Does that indicate he had already left the building?

A check of both the KOOL and CBS Radio websites' jobs sections
show no posting yet for the PD position at KOOL.

Hmmm...I can program the same 94 overplayed mid-and-late 60s songs
as well as any radio professional. ;D And they have been sounding
a bit stale the past few months, music-wise.

I'm sure Charley knows he's going from one Gardner brother to another
with this move. If his next PD gig turns out to be WBT Charlotte, then
he'll hit the trifecta!

Really? Let's look at recent history:

Tim Maranville...Somehow programs the same 94 overplayed songs to #1 25-54.
John Clay...follows suit, and continues the success, but gets blown out in favor of...
Todd Wallace...expands playlist, drastically changes and nearly kills KOOL.
Charley Lake...returns to the same 94 overplayed songs...ratings (mostly) return.

Based upon the track records of recent KOOL PDs, there's apparently some skill involved, after all.
With any luck, whomever they hire to program that station will be wise enough to simply get out of the way.

So whomever programs Brown Eyed Girl, Happy Together and the other usual
overplayed suspects four times a day, whether it be a seasoned oldies PD pro or
one of us radio geeks from the (former) Tanim Board, should get boffo ratings, right?

But most of us on the Board are not the "typical" listener, and we don't want to hear
the same 94 songs over and over again...so if we win (800-song playlist instead of 200,
and 200 songs in power rotation instead of 20), we lose (ratings in the toilet).

Tight playlist or no, will KOOL ever again move forward into a bigger '70s percentage?
And I don't mean just up to 1973 but all the way to '79, and not just on a theme
weekend such as the one coming up. Man, I'm so sick of those wimpy Herman's
Hermits songs! (Sorry, Noonatics.)
