Charlie O'Donnell, "American Bandstand" and "Wheel of Fortune" voice, dead at 78

Re: Charlie O'Donnell, "American Bandstand" and "Wheel of Fortune" voice, dead at 78

Besides his being announcer and news anchor during the late 1970's into the early-mid 1980's at KCOP Channel 13 in Los Angeles.

RIP Charlie. You will be missed by the whole Wheel family. I have actually watched Wheel for several years now, enjoying having him for company. I wonder who's the next announcer will be for Wheel...

I watched WOF tonight and Johnny Gilbert from Jeopardy! was filling in. I think this ep. was taped in August , I am not sure. Do you think Johnny will do double duty on both WOF and J!?.

Re: Charlie O'Donnell, "American Bandstand" and "Wheel of Fortune" voice, dead a

If Johnny can squeeze both shows in, I could see it.
I'd suggest Don Morrow (I'm biased here), who has
substitute-announced on "Wheel" on several occasions,
but he's 83 and I don't know how many years he has left.

Re: Charlie O'Donnell, "American Bandstand" and "Wheel of Fortune" voice, dead a

I should add something I know I've mentioned before,
but it came back to me when I saw that Charlie O
had passed on. About two or three years ago "Wheel"
did a week of shows from St. Louis, and one of them had
him paying a visit to one of the jazz clubs there. He talked
like a true fan of the music, and it was the best part of the
show as far as I'm concerned.

I should also mention that he became the announcer on
ABC's 1967 game "Everybody's Talking" when Wink Martindale
left to host "Dream Girl Of '67."

Another legend leaves us.

I wonder if Charlie O. was ever considered for the announcing job on "Jeopardy" before any pilot was made.

Better tune in to Wheel Of Fortune tonight for any tributes. Who will replace him?

Of course we know both shows tape on the same lot, and like Mr. Patrick mentioned, if Johnny's willing to do it, Sony will accommodate him. However, Wheel does on-location taping quite a bit, but they could always pre-tape his announcements.

As to Mr. O'Donnell's passing...my condolences to his family. He's certainly one of the great voices in the history of the broadcasting business, with a resume second-to-none.

Re: Charlie O'Donnell, "American Bandstand" and "Wheel of Fortune" voice, dead a

Although I earlier mentioned Don Morrow, because he's done
the show, his age would be a negative. However, I think there
would be some kind of justice if Rich Fields got the job, given the
way he was booted off "The Price Is Right." He's the right age, and
he'd probably have a bigger audience, and more exposure, than he had
on "TPIR." (Wonder what Merv would make of any announcer who screams,
"A NEW CAR!"?)

But I'd be just as happy to see Johnny Gilbert working both "Wheel"
and "Jeopardy!"

Well with Johnny Gilbert, I went to see J! in 2000 in Atlanta when they were taping the TOC and he went along with them. He even came and warmed up the audience!
