Charlie Phillips passes

Sad to hear of the passing of "Chas" (Charlie Phillips) at the age of 78 who, after retiring from the Air Force took on the duties of engineer for WIDE/WBYC (eventually WYJY/WSTG).
Charlie was a character, and enjoyed even getting behind the mic once in a while. Duct-tape, bailing wire, gum and whatever else was on hand, with the occasional trip to Radio Shack to buy "actual" parts - he kept those stations on the air.
I will miss Charlie. He was one-of-a-kind.

Charlie could fix anything! And I'll never forget him pronouncing the singer of "Time After Time" as "Cyndi Looper" on WIDE. No doubt stock in the maker of Chesterfields dropped about 50% with his passing. When they created Chas, they broke the mold. Radio (and life in general) is all the poorer without people like Charlie.

Radio lost an intelligent engineer and dear friend when Chas left us. This man was a friend to everyone he came in contact with. WIDE and WYJY was a fun upbeat environment and he made it that much better. When I came in to work he was always there to great me with a smile. Sometimes I just hangout after my shift and we would have a good conversation with over a pot of coffee that would last into the late night hours. The stories of the engineering mishaps and family were endless. Charlie, you will be missed!
