Charlie Tuna

Does anyone know all of the stations Charlie Tuna is on? I know he is live on K-EARTH. Now I Just found out he is on every weeknight on Big 98.3 Savannah Georgia. So maybe there are more stations hopefully! :)

oh Voice Tracking. Gotta love the secrets in radio and the board operator tricking the caller pretending that its the DJ yet its like a Miss Cleo or Arnold Schwarzenegger Sound Board

Hey...I'd much rather hear Charlie Tuna than the average medium-market $30K a year Clear Channel jock VTing.

Does anyone know if he still has that four-hour show featuring all-70's music? I heard it several years ago on KOOL-FM/Phoenix, but I don't know if it's still in existence.

Thanks!

I googled my way into this, from March. Apparently his show is "Tuna" content only, and you plug in whatever format (presumably music) you want around Charlie's witty comments.

Clear Channel did a similar thing with John's Tesh's program at night for awhile in San Francisco on Star 101.3 (KIOI). They even had Tesh pre-record some intros and back announcements for some of the music. But his show content seemed an odd fit for a CHR station.

Here in Hartford, Connecticut 102.9 DRC-FM carries "The 70s With Charlie Tuna" every Sunday night 6PM-11PM. I think Charlie's a great jock. My mom doesn't usually listen to the radio that late on a Sunday, but a couple months ago my family and I were coming back from a wake and the show was on and my mom was like "How come that DJ's named after the Tuna Fish Mascot?" She says one of the canned tuna fish companies has a mascot called Charlie the Tuna.

Starkist.

"Sorry Charlie."

That's true. Charlie the Tuna was animated - in commercials for Star Kist tuna. Actor Hershel Bernardi provided the voice. Those commercials were around at the same time Art Ferguson (Boss Jock Charlie Tuna) was a top rated DJ at KHJ in Los Angeles, but Star Kist was first.

I remember wondering at the time why Star Kist didn't fuss about copyright infringement. Maybe they figured Charlie (the DJ) helped them sell more tuna.

Star Kist brought their Charlie back for a few commercials a year or two ago.

Tesh I think still offers that show in that format (bring your own music) if you desire.

Do you really believe the average voice-track medium-market jock makes $30k annually? That sounds like a high figure to me unless it's morning drive you're referring.

Yup. In Northeast Ohio even, his liners air in evenings on CCM WFHM/Cleveland. 100 miles down south, however, the liners also play at the same time on soft AC WQIO/Mount Vernon. Some stations may even air them in middays, one I think even does so in afternoons. And because its' only voice-tracking, Tesh could easily handle localized liners for almost every single station in about an hour - and not miss a beat.

It's similar to the voice-tracking service WAITT Networks developed a few years ago for their 24-hour music channels (which continues today under Triton's Dial-Global umbrella).

Does anyone happen to remember when Charlie took over the morning shift at KHJ after Robert W. Morgan left for Chicago?

I believe it was sometime in the summer of 1970.

Charlie Van Dyke was on from 9AM-Noon, followed by Mark Elliott & The Real Don Steele, and I believe that Jerry Butler & Bill Wade worked 6-9PM & 9PM-midnight.

He USED to be on Armed Forces Radio back in 70s and 80s. Had a one hour daily show, which was taped at the old Armed Forces Network Facilities in West Hollywood, and sent all over the world by reel and eventually Satellite... It wasn't bad, either....

Am I dating myself? (And Charlie?)

I believe it was sometime in the summer of 1970.

Marv: Close. Here's the real deal: Morgan's last show was Friday, October 2, 1970.

Beginning Monday, October 5, 1970 it was Charlie Tuna (6-9), Bill Wade (9-Noon), Mark Elliott (Noon-3), The Real Don Steele (3-6), Humble Harve (6-9), Shadoe Stevens (9-Midnight), Johnny Williams (Midnight-6).

Mark Elliott was brought down from KFRC, San Francisco to fill the gap created by Tuna's move to mornings.

On Thursday, October 15, 1970, Jerry Butler (from WRKO) replaced Shadoe Stevens in 9-Midnight. Shadoe was KHJ's weekend and fill-ins guy and had been doing 9-Midnight for several weeks after Chuck Browning was fired. Shadoe had hoped to get the slot full-time, but PD Ted Atkins went for Butler (who Shadoe had worked with at WRKO). Shadoe did his Sunday shift on October 18, and on Monday, October 19, showed up at KRLA doing 6-9PM.

KHJ hired Pete McNeal from KYA, San Francisco as their new weekend/fill-in talent.

Humble Harve's last show was Thursday, May 6, 1971. On Monday, May 10, Jerry Butler moved into the 6-9PM slot, Pete McNeal took over 9PM-Midnight and Dick Sainte was hired from KRLA for weekends and fill-ins.

In December, 1971, Dick Sainte left, Bill Wade moved to weekends and fill ins (that position paid the same as a fulltime KHJ jock, with the requirement that you were available for any shift at any time), Pete McNeal moved to 9AM-Noon and Walt Baby Love was hired from WOR-FM in New York for 9PM-Midnight.

On Friday, January 14, 1972, Charlie Tuna announced on the air that the next day (Saturday, January 15) would be his last show on KHJ. The L.A. Times had run a story that morning. KHJ was bringing back Robert W. Morgan from WIND, Chicago, had offered Charlie the opportunity to return to middays, but Tuna refused. Apparently, Ted Atkins thought the mention was crossing the line, because Tuna wasn't allowed to do the Saturday show. Bill Wade subbed on Saturday morning.

On Monday, January 17, 1972, Robert W. Morgan returned to KHJ. The rest of the lineup remained unchanged for one week.

On Monday, January 24, 1972, Charlie Van Dyke came in from KGB to do 9AM-Noon. Pete McNeal was transferred to KYNO, Fresno and quit the business shortly thereafter.

According to back issues of Billboard (thanks, Google Books!), Charlie Tuna was still working out his release from KHJ as late as March. He then went to KCBQ, San Diego for mornings, came back to L.A. for the launch of KROQ-AM on Labor Day, 1972, and then joined KKDJ in the fall of 1973. He got a second go at mornings at KHJ from May, 1977 to July, 1978.

Michael--Phenomenal research as always--thank you. Hard to believe I've been listening to him since he came to KHJ in 1967 when I was in the 10th grade.

His five-hour syndicated show, for those of you who are interested, airs on Sunday evenings from 5-10 PM (PDT) on another station on the 101.1 frequency, KONO/San Antonio.

Same here, Marv (except it was 7th grade for me).

I heard him on the KRTH stream on my iPhone a few months back and marvelled at how he really sounds the same. I suppose it helps that he was only 23 when he arrived at KHJ and never smoked, drank or did drugs and is athletically inclined besides.

You really have to admire Charlie. He's outlasted the rest of the KHJ Boss Jocks (apart from Rick Dees and unless you count Jim Carson's week or two in mornings in 1973, I can't think of another KHJ DJ from the Top 40 years 1965-1980 who's still working as a jock in L.A.). Even if you count Charlie Van Dyke (image work on KRTH) and Shadoe Stevens (announcer for the Craig Ferguson Show on CBS), Tuna's been in L.A. longer.

And he hasn't had it easy. He got a raw deal from KHJ (both times), KROQ-AM was a disaster (bouncing paychecks), he should have been given morning drive at KRTH 14 years ago (even Morgan said so)....I think it's been 17 sets of call letters for Charlie since 1967...but he's always persevered.

I continue to marvel 40+ years later at how polished he sounds, just as he always has at KHJ, KCBQ & other format powerhouses. I didn't realize that he'd worked at KROQ-AM, which was an AOR station in the early seventies while I was attending West LA College.

Steve Lundy was another killer jock on KROQ, and Charlie Fox, who I heard somewhere in southern illinois while driving from St. Louis to Chicago in June of 1991 (voicetracking?) also worked at KHJ.

I can only assume that Charlie left KROQ for KKDJ sometime in 1973, and 'bounced checks' was a very good reason to do so.
