Charlie Watts, Stones Drummer

Well this is a shock. Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts died at age 80. Just a few weeks ago he announced that he wouldn't be a part of the Stones' fall stadium tour. We wondered if his cancer had re-appeared. Now we know:

I think like most people, we see these legends as living forever. And in a way, they do. Still it's a shock when they die.

It sounds like his health deteriorated quickly after he withdrew from the tour. He was part of an iconic band for a hell of a long time. Keith Richards will likely outlast everyone!

The early Stones era (64--69) was filled with musical gems. RIP mate...

Very sad. We saw the Stones at "Oldchella" ("Desert Trip" was the real name) almost five years ago and were close enough to the stage (16th row, center) to actually see the band with our eyes, not the screens. Watts was marvelous, as always. I could see the jazz influence in his style since my first 5 years in radio were at an all jazz station where I saw plenty of the great artists of the 60's; that made me think of how that flavored many of the Stone's songs and made them so memorable and relevant even today.

Some of the obits are referencing the comment from "Get Yer Yayas Out" where Mick tells the crowd "Charlie's good tonight, ain't he?" That's just before this version of Honky Tonk Women, recorded at MSG in NYC in 1969:

And yes that's Charlie on the album cover. He described it here:

The Stones had many great live shows and some mediocre ones. It's easy to forget what a great drummer Watts was. His musicianship and style were a huge part of the band. Blues, Jazz, Fusion were all in his repertoire. I tend to prefer the Brian Jones era of the Stones. Those records really showed the talent of the individual members. Watts was at the core of all that...

From John Hiatt song "Slow Turning"---

"Now I'm in my car. I got the Radio on.
I'm yelling at the kids in the back seat
Cause they're banging like Charlie Watts"

Pete Townshend paid tribute to Watts today.
The great Townshend -- Ronnie Lane "Rough Mix" album featured Watts on drums. He played on a lot great tracks in his time. Supremely talented musician...

this is a sad day for rock music and like Dusty Hill's recent death, the older classic rockers of the 60s, 70s and 80s are starting to die off due to old age, if the lifestyles didn't kill them young, then they will die of old age instead and we are now entering that point where they are indeed dying off of old age and old people related health problems (made worse by the past drug/alcohol use). we need to accept fate that these rock legends won't live forever like their legacies will.

RIP Charlie.

The fall tour will continue, and become a celebration of his life:

Of course, he had informed them before his death that he was withdrawing from the tour.

I know that this tour is in stadiums, but are COVID precautions being taken?

A lot of that depends on the state. For example, this is what the Ticketmaster site says about Las Vegas:

Important Event Info
Allegiant Stadium takes the health and safety of its guests, employees, and staff very seriously. In response to rising COVID-19 cases, and in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and State of Nevada Emergency Directive 047, all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a face mask while inside the stadium. The State of Nevada & CDC do not currently require proof of vaccination to attend events. Allegiant Stadium’s COVID-19 protocols are subject to change as additional information is discovered or provided by the State of Nevada & the CDC.

Some other stadiums are limiting the number of tickets being sold. You'll see the details when you buy tickets.

I was in Lost Wages over the weekend. The entire state of Nevada is mask-mandatory, including live venues and casinos.
