I'm not sure I've seen this recently, a market where the two country stations finish in first and second place. Beasley's WSOC is #1 and iHeart's WKKT is #2, although WKKT has a better cume than WSOC. 103.7 WSOC has been a country FM station since 1971. 96.9 WKKT flipped in 1985, so both have a lot of history in the Charlotte market. WKKT has to deal with another station on 96.9 less than 100 miles away, WXBQ Bristol, which also plays country music. They both have directional antennas.
You'd think with so many transplanted Northern residents in the Charlotte market, the two country stations wouldn't be this strong. In nearby Greensboro-Winston-Salem, the country stations are at #6 and #8. In Raleigh, they're #9 and #11.
Unlike many Southern markets, Charlotte's NPR stations are #6 and #20 (the second one from South Carolina). And its Classical station is tied for #9. Many Southern markets don't even have a Classical station, let alone one in the top ten.
But with all the listening to Country and Classical music, Charlotte's AC, Hot AC and Top 40 stations struggle. AC WKQC (which leans toward Classic Hits) is tied for #9 with Classical WDAV. Hot AC WLNK is #15 and Top 40 WNKS is #16.
