Charlotte Field Testing Project - Volunteers Needed.

This went out in an email to local TV Staff. I don't know how to ''link'' to it as it is just text. This was I was referring to in my previous post.

PS: I see no way to share the Attachment with the Board ???. Steve.

Subject- Charlotte Field Testing Project - Volunteers needed.

Steve,

I got your contact information from Wayne Kube at Belo in Dallas. We are going to be conducting some field testing in the Charlotte, NC area for NAB Labs on All-Digital AM Radio signals in the next few weeks.

A big part of this test is to compare outdoor reception to indoor reception. I’m contacting you in the hopes that you may be able to help us recruit some volunteers that would allow us to perform measurements at their homes. We would also like to make some measurements at the WCNC studios/offices if that is a possibility?

We are seeking volunteers from your company as well as any Amateur Radio Friends, or colleagues from other radio or television stations or any other interested groups (such as the local SBE Chapter) to allow us to make signal level measurements at their offices, homes, or other places that they may have available to them.

In total, we need about 20-30 volunteers – so please feel free to forward to anyone in the Charlotte area that may be interested in volunteering.

In terms of locations, we need a variety of distances from downtown Charlotte out to about 60-70 miles. So, certainly anyone in the region would be a potential candidate to volunteer.

I have attached a cover letter explaining the project that also has our volunteer form attached.

We are asking folks to fill out the form and email it back to me at [email protected]. Once I have received the form I will contact them via email to setup the test times at their location – working to make sure it is convenient for the volunteer.

Our testing starts right after Thanksgiving – so we would like to get the volunteer forms back in the next week or so such that we can start scheduling tests with the volunteers in the next few days.

At this point, we anticipate testing to occur during two testing periods. The first test period will be from Nov. 25 through Nov. 29 and the second testing period from December 8 through December 17th.

However, we do have several specific days when we’ll be doing daytime tests that we will need access to the test sites. Those days are Nov. 25, Dec. 8, 9, 15 & 16. So, we ask that the volunteers be available during one of those days as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I really appreciate your cooperation in helping us find volunteers.

Thank You,

Dennis

Are they talking about testing AM HD Radio reception? I know WBT and WSB have chosen not to broadcast an AM digital signal for technical reasons. But when I was in Ohio previously, the Cincinatti station had a very good digital signal on 700-AM. So it can be done. And here in Greenville, SC, I can get most of the Charlotte HD Radio signals on FM with an attic antenna, and several with just rabbit ears. I have a Sony HD table radio and the Sony HD Radio tuner. Both have good sensitivity for analog and digital reception.

Yes this is exactly what they talking about testing. They want to see how it goes FWIW. Maybe it will pan out, or maybe it won't. Just interesting that they are taking the time to do this.

It is really nice that you can get CLT HD FM that far away on an attic antenna. Some people 3 miles from me have trouble with their HD-TV-Over-The-Air Signals breaking apart. They too have rabbit ear antennas, but they are in a warehouse so I believe that is the cause of their reception problem. Steve.

If they run full day power on the test I might could get them on the Sangean HDT-1 here in rural Newberry County, SC

I filled out their form but so far haven't heard if they are going to use my location.

1660 was my guess from the start since they have HD and are changing format at the first of the year anyway.

Apparently The Tests Have Been Run And AM's Future Is Still Uncertain At This Point.

For some technical reason, major stations WBT and WSB have chosen not to broadcast an HD Radio signal on the AM band. But it can be done, as in Ohio WLW 700-AM has a very good HD Radio signal.
