Wow, that's quite a leap. I don't think it's over yet either!

Anyone want to speculate how it all started? Is it our 2 big banks that have transfered people here, or NASCAR or maybe people from Florida who are tired of dealing with hurricanes?

I wonder how many of us would be here if air conditioning hadn't been invented? Charlotte can be hotter than Miami in the summer (but not as humid). Miami gets a good breeze and cools down faster at night in the summer.

someone correct me but didn't the "name" of the market change to Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord after the 2000 Census

Concord being now more populated than Rock Hill as 3rd largest city...perhaps due to NASCAR. And yes, A/C was invented by a native

And the Charlotte TV market has stepped up from 28 to 26 (passing Hartford and San Diego) in the last two years, and I would say it will continue to go up a few more steps in the next few years. Indianapolis is TV market 25. Sorry, Raleigh-Durham TV seems to be stuck at #29.

Apparently not because Arbitron still lists it as "Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill."

I'd imagine a large part of the explosive population growth could be attributed to the illegal alien migration to the area. I don't remember the exact figures, but I saw a tv blurb recently saying the illegal numbers are up several hundred percent in the last 3 years, or something along those lines.

Not sure illegal immigrants are counted in official census tallies for market size. North Carolina markets have been some of the fastest growing in the country for over a decade.

I dont know...have you been down Central Avenue lately??

Actually, I don't think census-takers are allowed to ask whether or not somebody is here illegally, so some of them are actually counted. For example, a household with two legal immigrants and four illegal ones will be counted as a six-person household for census purposes.

All quaint racism aside, who cares who makes up the number as long as it's bigger. Or does anybody really wish Charlotte was market 191?

I didn't know all these people moving here from New York, Florida and other parts of NC were illegal. I thought they were true blooded Americans. I also don't think Arbitron exactly counts the illegal immigrant population when ranking their DMA's. Charlotte is one of the fastest growing cities no matter where the people are coming from.

There is no doubt that we will be a top 25 TV market by the end of the decade and possibly a top 30 radio market as well. The question is, will the media start acting larger market or will they keep their insular, mid-market presentation. Heck Atlanta's top-10 in both yet you wouldn't know it by what's on.
