Charlotte radio in mid 80's

On YouTube, user reillync has uploaded videos on how Charlotte was like during the mid 1980s, with driving tours. If you turn the volume up, you can hear old Charlotte radio stations, not just the major ones, even WHKY-FM and WRDX.

One driving tour is from 1986, and look at how small Charlotte is compared to what it is now.

Another is from January 1987 after a 7 inch snowstorm in Charlotte, and in the background, Mike Collins's morning show on WBT is on, actually playing music (unlike now).

Neat! Who knows what else may pop up from private video archives!

I have countless driving tour videos, some with my father cursing as we travel, so that kills the radio airchecks that were picked up on the camera mike. some day I have to post them.Wow in 1986 The gas was .69 cents in Charlotte.Whats it now,$3.69 to $4.00.

Well since you've asked Kahuna, here's 2 clips of WAYS's (Robert) Murphy In The Morning from the late 70s. First is the "Pass The Loot Club".

And, did you know that too much sex can make you go deaf?

And finally, here is a news report from WSOC-TV on the demise of WAYS as a Top 40 station as reported by Nerissa Williams. From the summer of 1982, it features both then-PD Scott Slade and Larry Sprinkle.

Robyn,
Thanks for those links, I had seen the WSOC'TV clip before but not the others. Good stuff! I am building Murphy's own website for him as we speak, at www.murphyinthemorningradio.com, it will be a while before I get some stuff on there though, this is a big project, I have a box crammed full of material his brother sent to me.

Hi Robin,
Thanks for sending those clips out. I had forgotten how funny Murphy was. It is a shame that we have homogonized crap now and I really do miss the local AM pop radio especially. We used to have some good stuff here in Columbia in the 60's and 70's and most of it was on AM and would love to see it revive again.
