Mike, agreed about the CHR stations. Beat by a Gospel station? 'RFX beat by a Classical station? I didn't even want to comment on their rating, but your response prompted it. It's the same thing I've been saying for the past 15 years on this board. Is it their music? Are they adding new songs too late, &/or not having enough variety? Almost every time I listen, I hear Pink Floyd or Golden Earring's "Radar Love". Is this the state of Classic Rock in the USA, or is it just them? Even John Boy & Billy's bio isn't on their website!Interesting numbers...what happened to WRFX? The CHR stations seem to be having a tough year.
Right. Shouldn't it be "Twilight Zone", and the long version?Almost every time I listen, I hear Pink Floyd or Golden Earring's "Radar Love". Is this the state of Classic Rock in the USA, or is it just them?
G105 in the triangle is doing even worse. They have never had lower numbers as CHR. And their competitor is doing worse but they do have signal limitations.Interesting numbers...what happened to WRFX? The CHR stations seem to be having a tough year.
WHQC and The Pulse started out as rhythmic. Greenville SC still has a rhythmic station. This may also be the case in Greensboro.G105 in the triangle is doing even worse. They have never had lower numbers as CHR. And their competitor is doing worse but they do have signal limitations.
Regarding WRDU, it's not the same station that it was. The 106.1 frequency was WRDU until that station went country and then talk, and then the format came back years later with the WRDU letters. While WRFX has been basically unchanged, and WEND just moved in a more classic direction gradually.I contacted Chris Crowley, PD - Charlotte & Raleigh - 99.7 The Fox -106.5 The End -100.7 WRDU. Asked him why WEND is doing better now than in years before, even though it's Alternative - even beating The Fox. He said it's doing better because it's basically a 90's/2000's nostalgia format at this point with a few new songs tossed in for flavor. It's more of a Classic Rock station for the 2020's. Regarding The Fox, the answers aren't simple ones, unfortunately. Programming in Radio today is more difficult, with layers of people to go through to get a decision. The Fox is suffering because of numerous reasons, all of which he is trying to fix. In his opinion, The Fox has too much variety, but not the right kind. It's too wide & not deep enough. Again, all things he's in an effort to change, & given the chance, he will. He's never failed to turn a failing radio station around in his 30 years in the business. It's what he specializes in, & he's a fixer! WRDU is top 3 in the ratings (not 6+, rather 25-54) & has been since he changed the direction.
That’s why he was hired. Same with Shelly on WKKT. WKKT, WRFX and especially WEND were all underperforming under the previous PD and iHeart wanted to improve their position here. They’ve done a good job so far with all 3 stations being near the top in their respective formats nationwide. WEND and WKKT have both set ratings records in the last year or so, and WRFX has been as high as #2 in cume.I contacted Chris Crowley, PD - Charlotte & Raleigh - 99.7 The Fox -106.5 The End -100.7 WRDU.
