Charlotte's Brand New Radio Station

Looks like we've got a new radio station! It's Oldies 106.1. I discovered it late this morning while surfing around the FM dial. Check it out and let's hear some thoughts.

I guess we could say that the station (WOLS/Waxhaw) has lowered the age of their target demo by a few years from what it was as Mix 106.1.

Apparently it's off the bird (Jones Satellite out of Colorado).  I know it's early, the music seems to be ok but the production pieces and the jocks are not impressive in the least.  Certainly, no where near the level of the former Magic 96.1.  But then again, Magic was one of the best sounding oldies stations in the country.

Hey, at least the 50+ listeners have got some oldies on the radio again.  We can give the station credit for that!

Too bad it had to be 106.1. I liked the station the way it was and I'm in my lower 40s. Any other changes in formats happening?

From the web:

Aiming to snare a younger demographic, WNMX FM (106.1) abruptly changed
formats at 10 a.m. Tuesday, moving from adult standards like Tony Bennett
to the "oldies" music of the `60s and `70s.
"It's a younger first cousin to what we were doing," said Tom Gentry,
general manager.
In making the change, WNMX fills a void left when Clear Channel radio
pulled the plug on WWMG FM ("Magic") in September 2004 and replaced it with
the rhythmic-pop WIBT FM ("The Beat" 96.1).
Ken Conrad will continue to host the station's morning show. There were no
staff changes because of the format change, Gentry said.

Big congrats to Ken. He's a great guy. Just wish they'd have done this four years ago!

So that they would have had a morning show called Ken and the Eggman? :D

I was toolin along on my way to work when the flip came. I had a hunch this might happen by the tunes Ken's been playing lately, tho. Third song they played after the switch was Magic Carpet Ride.....I Like!!! (just hope the old geezers didn't blow a fuse!) Seems to be satellite delivered (heard a hitch or 2, but I suspect they'll get it slicked up in a day or so). I'm just glad to have some 60's \ 70's music to listen to besides the same ole tired 25 songs the Fox plays.

I agree Magic it's not! Butn then Magic was a special station. Lots of fun and energy!

A good Standards format is hard to find. So while I understand the reason for the change I liked what they were doing before. I'll still have a button on my radio for them but I probably won't go there as often.

Having been in the biz I'm far from the mainstream listener I'd like to see 106.1 get some good numbers they can sell.

I haven't been listening on the hour yet I hope they keep the hourly ABC News. I have a feeling that will be history too.

I must admit, though, that I'm extremely touched and humbled that they made the switch on my birthday.

*sniff*

I'm gonna need a minute here.

Wonder where the WNMX calls will go.

IMHO, good calls for a "Mix" station format.

WOLS were the calls at a 1kw AM facility in Florence SC.

Wonder what their new calls will be.

IMHO, WOLS are good calls for an Oldies outlet.

Now, if we could only pick them up on the north side of Charlotte. :-\ They must have one of the shortest sticks left in the Piedmont. Yes I know they must protect the Hickory area.

Thanks to WMMY (106.1 in Jefferson) going on the air some 8-10 years ago, WNMX's signal got obliterated from Statesville to Hickory to Morganton and northward. I've told this story before...I remember driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway from Blowing Rock to Deep Gap about a week before WMMY was turned on. WNMX was coming in like gangbusters, and I thought to myself that there will be hundreds of retirees in these mountains going into cardiac arrest when WMMY's Hot New Country comes blaring through in a few days. I often wished GHB would buy WMMY and simulcast -- you could hear it from border to border on I-77 and US 321!!

First of all I would like to say that I am 20, and the best music on the radio is infact Oldies. Charlotte has needed an Oldies station since 2004, ever since the Evil Empire known as Clear Channel flipped Magic 96 to the garbage that is still playing on 96.1 right now. The new oldies station WOLS will never be as good as Magic 96.1 which has already been pointed out in another post. I agree with this, based on the fact that Magic 96.1 had a very good playlist. The jingles a were outstanding, the on air talent was the best of all time, and Magic 96.1 had the transmitter up at 1700 feet above ground level with 100,000 watts of power to rock the Piedmont. The good news is 106.1 does cover greater Charlotte atleast, and for those of you that live on the North side of Charlotte, what is wrong with listening to Majic 94.1 out of Lexington? For those of you who liked the format on 106.1 before it flipped to Oldies, what is wrong with listening to WKQC 104.7? Does WKQC not air a similar format to what used to be played on 106.1? The whole thing is this folks, Charlotte now has a new Oldies station and this is great. The boomers that like Oldies around the Charlotte area have waited since 2004 for the Oldies to return to Charlotte and now it has finally happend thank god. Do I live in the Charlotte area? No I don't, but I do travel to Charlotte quite a bit, and I for one will enjoy having something to listen to on the radio when traveling around Charlotte, especially when I am at a stoplight. To conclude, please everyone look at this as a positive situation. The Oldies have been badly missed in Charlotte for quite some time, but now they are back, and hopefully they will remain on the Charlotte airwaves for a long time.

You better keep your fingers crossed that it isn't just stunting, and then March 1st Mexican appears on 106!
I would not be surprised one bit!

The problem is now artists like Barry Manillow,John Denver,Kenney Rogers are no longer played on the air. Lite and K-104.7 play the usual AC artists. Mix 106 was able play artists forgotten by most radio stations. Another format gone in charlotte..

You know it seems like I asked nicely to look at this as a positive situation. Stoker, no offense but why would they change the stations call letters to something like WOLS which sounds like "oldies" only to flip the station to Mexican? And why would they name the station Oldies 106.1 if they were going to stunt? Why would they not keep the same call letters and just identify using those call letters while playing a mixture of different songs if they were going to stunt? Please tell me Sir why in the hell did 100000watts.com say "WNMX 106.1 Charlotte NC flips from standards to oldies" instead of something like WNMX drops adult standards and is now stunting, if they were not going to keep the Oldies format? There is some outside chance you might be right, but I seriously doubt it Stoker. Hschutte I am sorry you cannot be satisfied with what is now being played on 106.1 I really am, but it has been nearly 3 and a half years since Charlotte has had their own Oldies station. I think we who like Oldies deserve a radio station that plays our kind of music in Charlotte given how long residents of the Charlotte area have had to wait. Furthermore, getting back to what Stoker said about the Mexican format, why would they flip to Mexican if Charlotte already has a HUGE powerhouse mexican radio station right up the dial on 105.3? Let us also not forget WNOW 1030-AM which is a mexican oriented station, as well as WXNC 1060-AM. I sent e-mails to the heads of Clear Channel when Magic 96 died telling them nicely that they created a hole in the market. I sent letters to Entercom when Oldies 93 died telling them nicely that they created a hole in the market. If some of you out there really want an Adult Standards station back in Charlotte then try doing what I did, but for christ sake don't criticise 106.1 for bringing back what some people have waited on for years!!!

I like oldies too. I just would have liked another station to do this. I agree it's been one of the big gaps in charlotte radio. 106.1 was one station I listened too alot because of it's soft mixes.

Exactly! This really is evident if you have ever listened to XM's '70's on 7 channel.

I wish 106.1 well with this format but I don't know if it will catch on without a lot of promotion and a live local presentation in all dayparts.

what station is next.....

probably a small unimportant AM station that no-one cares. That's all the format flips in Charlotte for 2008, folks. Let's start counting down to 09'.
