Charlotte's NEW "MY 92.7"

Radio One Charlotte has relaunched Urban AC Q92.7 as the new MY 92.7 "R&B from the 80s, 90s and Now." This is supposed atract the active, hip and contemporary African Americans between 25-54. Personally, I think Radio One never should've given up on 92.7 when it was Hip-Hop as HOT 92.7. That openned the door for Clear Channel to launch 96.1 The BEAT to compete with POWER 98. Im suprised Radio One hasn't sold off the Charlotte stations.

If they had stayed Urban A/C their only competition would have been V-101.9. It seems like this way aren't the in competition with Power, Beat and even Kiss to some extent?

How about an Urban Gold format?

These types of 80s-90s based Urban stations have failed before. I recall a station attempting this in Atlanta and it did very poorly. Although this station is at such a low level they have nowhere to go but up.

Yes, we had 97.1 JAMZ which was "Jamz from the 80s, 90s and Now." They were more R&B/Hip-Hop than just Classic Soul and R&B. The reason the station failed was because Cox put no effort into spending money on jocks nor promotions. The new direction for Urban AC stations should include old scool Hip-Hop (LL Cool J, Run DMC, etc) in rotations. That is the format hole between Urban and Urban AC stations especially in cities that have 2 outlets.

96.1 does not compete with 97.9. 96.1 competes more with 95.1. Trust me, I have teenagers. 96.1 is listened to by mostly white suburban "kids." On topic, part of the problem with 92.7 (other than obvious low power) is they can't stick to one format long enough to gain traction!

I gave 92.7 a bit of a listen today and the music just about put me to sleep. Didn't hear any uptempo songs at all. that is my problem with whatever they are trying now. I agree, they never have given any format long enough time to work, and probably should have never dropped the smooth jazz format they used to run to begin with.

I listened for about 2 minutes today, and totally agree it was a snooze fest. I was hoping they were going to be similar to their Jammin' Oldies they had in the late 90's. I enjoyed that very short lived format.

I wonder if Greater Media would be interested in expanding its CLT cluster? Urban may just not work on 92.7 and that's all Radio One does. They should sell it (and 100.9 I guess and exit the market) and try something other than Urban. Radio One has exited a good amount of markets over the past few years.

I don't think they should sale the station. However, I think they need to look at what should work in their market and go for it. The market is lacking a station that fits the 25-40 void since CBS Radio screwed up the Charlotte urban market with the skewed duo of WBAV/WPEG (when they should have just got WPEG and made another stand-alone urban powerhouse like WPGC, WZMX, WJHM, or WVEE). Anyways, they need to supply the audience with local personalities that can connect to the listeners and more community involvement that reaches them 24/7 and they might make a dent in the market.

92.7 would probably be perfect for FM Sports Talk.

Like I said before, Im shock they didn't sell off Charlotte. Can Charlotte's African American population support all of these stations..?

POWER 98(CBS)-Urban Mainstream
V101.9(CBS)-Urban AC
MY 92.7(Radio One)-Urban AC
PRAISE 100.9(Radio One)-Urban Gospel)

..and if POWER 98 is in commercial 96.1 THE BEAT(Clear Channel) is the selected choice.

From what I see this really wasn't a flip. More like tweakage.

Isn't the station still Tagged Urban AC?

92.7 FM need to boost up there power to cover some new city listening around the carolina.

They can't by law. The fcc will not approve it. They will interfere with 92.5 in Greenville, SC. It's too close, I think they will interfere with 92.9 down near Florence as well.

You have a very valid argument about the FCC but that is just more gov't that doesn't work very well sometimes. There are many stations that are near to each other that seem to make it with good coverage. I think the FCC could allow 92.7 to increase their power in a directional manner as they are nearly 100 miles from Florence and 100+ mi from Greenville. This distance should allow for at least a 5 fold increase in power directionally. Look at 95.7 & 95.5 and also 99.7 & 99.5 (approx 60 miles distance to High Pt). These are just a couple of examples of 100KW stations under 100 miles apart that are directional powerhouses. If the FCC would allow a increase in power,it could greatly improve 92.7 in the region. I understand the short spacing as 92.5 & 92.9 are not directional, but the extended distances would help compensate for that. Just a thought as 92.7 has a weak penetrating signal when outside of the University area that will always hender it's ability to attact listeners.
