We actually used to do our playlist the hard way - buying CD's as they came out, and screening them for good songs. We had about half a dozen teenagers who came in to announce and help out, and they screened things for us. We had quite a good playlist, and it gave the station good ratings. For a Christian station --- but we were making inroads into the secular stations, they took note and picked up a couple of Christian songs. We also listened carefully to a station across the state - they had a good song, we put it on.
I find that the Christian music industry has agendas - foisting praise and worship on teenagers (NOT gonna work, EVER), pushing certain artists like Sandy(i) Patty (NEVER fit our format), pushing tracks on CD's that aren't as good as some others, etc. We didn't play those games. We took the promotional CD's, played the song if it fit our format, but played what our "board" and our listeners really wanted, even if we had to buy the darn CD to get it. It worked.
Bottom line - listen to the listeners - not station management, not churches, not anybody else but the Holy Spirit - who will probably back up your listeners because HE is in the business of drawing them closer to Christ. That isn't always the agenda of station management, or even churches (witness the RAID on WCIE by church elders- Ichabod.)
