Charts/Adds

Now that Radio & Records has shut down its service, what charts are best for Contemporary Christian AC & CHR? Billboard?

Also, R&R listed songs that were new/going for adds. Have any other magazines/sources offering the same?

What was nice about R&R, was that the charts were free on the Internet. You can get charts from Billboard, but it will cost you.

If you have an account with All Access, you can get the Mediabase Christian AC chart for free.

R&R was good for the radio folks. Billboard is geared more to retail. Maybe someone will step in and fill the void, but I doubt it.

The best thing you can do is your own market research, or have a company do it for you if you have the budget for it.

We do have an account with Billboard, and we have Mediabase... We still don't see the list of songs going for adds the way R&R did. We have an HD2 Christian station in Tampa (104.7-2 The Faith), and as an HD2, we haven't received much support from the labels.

INO has been pretty good. They've taken care of us with music. MPE player and Promo Only have been my other helpers. The rest, I've had to rely on purchasing to get on the air.

On the bright side, not knowing what the labels are pushing hardest, we listen to pretty much everything we can get.

With my station, now that I am blind to what is being added (unless a label sends it to me on mpe with an add date..) I have to go with the flow without having access to the wealth of info they had. If the label never pushes it to me for adding, I may now never know it went for adds unless I happen to hear it elsewhere. (there been times ive had to track down songs because I didnt get them serviced to me...) now without knowing the trends, I may not know something is going for adds.

There's something to be said for listening to everything coming in. There's a lot of good music that doesn't get play because a major label isn't behind it, or it's a "B" side, or whatever. Of course there's some bad cuts that slip in too, but they are pretty easy to detect. It probably won't hurt too much to add a few unknowns into the mix. You might find a gem.

I agree that INO is good about letting us know what's going for adds. Play MPE is a source for that info too, but we don't always get everything going for adds from the labels through PlayMPE. So it will be a little harder now.

While I like knowing what's current and hot, I also agree that perhaps not having as many charts to follow or reference will lead to us all relying on our ears and listener feedback a bit more. And that can be a healthy thing.

Christian Labels have always been good to be when i've needed something, its just at times I have learned about something from another source (another station etc..) then had to go ask for it. INO is really good though.

I would suggest Rob Green in Indy with his very legit Christian Music Weekly... If you report, you get the chart of your choice.... CHR/AC/INSPO... Very good for shows like mine and full time music intense CCM stations.... www.christianmusicweekly.com ....

To Ted Kelly:

I love your web site. It rocks! Keep up the great work. Been a big fan of it, for years now.

We actually used to do our playlist the hard way - buying CD's as they came out, and screening them for good songs. We had about half a dozen teenagers who came in to announce and help out, and they screened things for us. We had quite a good playlist, and it gave the station good ratings. For a Christian station --- but we were making inroads into the secular stations, they took note and picked up a couple of Christian songs. We also listened carefully to a station across the state - they had a good song, we put it on.

I find that the Christian music industry has agendas - foisting praise and worship on teenagers (NOT gonna work, EVER), pushing certain artists like Sandy(i) Patty (NEVER fit our format), pushing tracks on CD's that aren't as good as some others, etc. We didn't play those games. We took the promotional CD's, played the song if it fit our format, but played what our "board" and our listeners really wanted, even if we had to buy the darn CD to get it. It worked.

Bottom line - listen to the listeners - not station management, not churches, not anybody else but the Holy Spirit - who will probably back up your listeners because HE is in the business of drawing them closer to Christ. That isn't always the agenda of station management, or even churches (witness the RAID on WCIE by church elders- Ichabod.)
