Chattanooga: Max-FM

Seems as though the rumors of GT108 in Chattanooga flipping, led to Clear Channel beating them to the punch.

Earlier today 97.3 WMAX (formerly all 80's) went Variety Hits as Max-FM.

A totally "JACK"-ed up week!

Okay, let's review:

Memorial Day weekend: WOXY, WAXZ & WAOL/Cincinnati
May 29th: WEGT/Tallahassee
June 2nd: WLKC & WXAL/Burlington
June 3rd: WCBS-FM/New York City, WJMK/Chicago and WMAX-FM/Chattanooga

One gets the feeling that we could see more "JACK/BOB" flips on the horizon.

(Note: CKDG/Montreal only has Variety Hits in drivetimes and doesn't count as a full-time format)

Re: A totally "JACK"-ed up week! The Fall Of The Mighty

This format is now getting to the point of Red Hot. I would also say that excitement for Variety has overtaken the excitement for the Jammin' Oldies fad a few years ago.

Will this be a fad or will it be the great format of the decade? It has overtaken some giants in the industry now.

Re: A totally "JACK"-ed up week! The Fall Of The Mighty

I agree, this format is very hot right now. Seems like every day these days, a Jack (Variety Hits) format pops up. At this rate, most markets will end up with a variety hits station in a year. Lets see if this rate continues, or if it drops off the cliff. I personally hope it will stay, as I enjoy the variety of variety hits. I am hoping for a station of this sorts in this tiny market (number 100 something). Variety is dull here.

I don't think Jack is a fad...
JO have a limited selection of music, and thus quick playlist burnout.
Jack has no such problem.

I think Jack just saved radio!

Re: A totally "JACK"-ed up week! The Fall Of The Mighty

In the late 80s "New Age" (now called "Smooth Jazz") was the format that was going to "save radio". You could hear PDs chanting "OM"! We had jammin' Oldies, now it's Jack. Remains to be seen if it has legs.

Chattanooga's 97-3/99-3 The Max will be sorely missed. They had an unbelievable variety of '80s. Much better than the Cox's "Point" stations.

Re: A totally "JACK"-ed up week! The Fall Of The Mighty

Yeah, it will be interesting to see if this new format fairs any better than other ones have in the past decade. There was Young Country, then Modern AC, then Jammin' Oldies, then Hot Talk, then all 80's, and all have hit quickly and faded just as quickly. Guess we'll have to wait and see if this is the real thing or just the newest "flavor of the month".
