CHEAP CHANNEL

It is so "lovely" to hear about how CheapChannel is continuing to do what it can to kill the radio industry.

I was reading online a general article about the recession and then came across this sentence paragraph,

"Clear Channel Communications Inc. will lay off 1,500 employees on Jan. 20, mostly in ad sales, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the situation. Clear Channel is the largest U.S. radio broadcaster. "

What brainiac came up with the idea of getting rid of the ad sales people? They are the heart of a radio station....

And as they cheapen themselves in programming and slamming more ads, they are going to get even less listeners.

You know Clear Channel needed to do something (especially in San Diego) to thin back employees. They have way too many. You dont need a promotions department for 7 stations anymore! Each station these days does about ONE major promotion a year that would warrant the need for one small group of promotions people to run that. They also had sales managers that were over other sales managers, they have WAY too many managers there. If the employees need that many middle managers to babysit them, then get some employees that are worth a darn. The sad thing is that they will probably get rid of the true broadcasters from the place. And they DO have alot of dead weight in sales, promotions, and yes even programming. Why does a station need an assistant PD, PD, and operations manger??? answer there is no reason. Clear Channel could easily cut 35% of the people in that building without hurting the on-air product (any worse than it already is!) and not loose any revenue. Some of the CC facilities in the country are running very lean, but CC SD is way too top heavy. If they ever had a complete department head meeting there would only be 5 people (out of 250)in the building that would miss the meeting.

Know what?
I think its more like "Broke-Channel" now.

There was a time when you could take the cuts personally.
But now, I really think they were allowd to buy more stations than they could afford.

If I went into a dealer and tried to buy a Rolls-Royce, I'd be laughed out of the showroom.
That's not what happened when Clear Channel bought all these stations. Maybe it should have...
Although it was through all these mergers. Doesn't help.

A rant from someone that never worked in programming or promotions I would guess.

You know Bufaloe, I was in programming at CC san diego, and I have had the wonderful work experience of doing everything in radio from PD, OM , CE, on air, production, board op'ing, and staff engineer. At least I am still in broadcasting as an engineer, and i am still in high demand for that. How are things at bext?

HMMM, last time I checked, being in a low level engineer, had nothing to do with programming a station or running a promotion. Just thought I would point that out.

It's a loss for all of us when ANYbody in radio loses their job. Ancient internecine squabbles about sales vs. promotions vs. airstaff vs. management are fruitless and serve only to demean the profession we all love. So let's quit this crap, huh?

Chris Carmichael of sdradio.net reports that some insiders report that 35 people were let go, and lists a lot of people involved in XTRA Sports. Is this an indication that there may soon be no more XTRA Sports?

Only local show: DSC? All other local morning shows gone too, Chris?

Bob and Tom on Rock 105.3 soon?

Hey David. It's about 40 confirmed from the North Texas shoot out. Ruth 66 gone from KGB (she worked for traffic); Bobbie Hill, and son of a Ditch -- afternoon drive host Ditch is out looking for work on the beach.

Promotions at Channel 933 and Stary eyed 94.1 were shelled with about 50percent loss.

Some swear that more to come on Wednesday.

what about coe louis and bromo?havnt heard bromo in a while.coe did a voice tracked shift.also,it seems like none of the clear chanel stations are answering there phones.the dsc will NEVER be the same!love ya ruthie!

So they got rid of Ruth66 but all the staff at JeffNJer made it through unscathed? That somehow doesn't see fair. Its not gonna be the same show in the mornings without her.

Coe Lewis was in the afternoon drive spot today. Bromo is still there. Letting Ruth go was a big mistake. XTRA Sports 1360 on the AM all on air staff is gone. Jeff N Jer?? That whole group needs to go IMHO.

Bromo was let go yesterday! They called and let him go over the phone, didn't even bother to let him come back to work again. So Bromo was part of the blood bath

Welcome to Radio Nowhere in San Diego and Los Angeles.

Excerpt of Bruce Springsteen's "Radio Nowhere" lyrics.
Clear Channel doesn't like him.
<I>
I was tryin' to find my way home
But all I heard was a drone
Bouncing off a satellite
Crushin' the last lone American night
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?

I was spinnin' 'round a dead dial
Just another lost number in a file
Dancin' down a dark hole
Just searchin' for a world with some soul

This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?
Is there anybody alive out there?

Just heard about the what I call "Freddy Kruegerizing" XTRA SPORTS 1360 ,among others CC stations in SD just had done to them by "THE EVIL UBERUNDERLORDS OF MEDIA" (UN-clear Channel) we here in Detroit feel your pain as "Freddy" came and left his body bags at WDFN AM litterally making the city's FIRST Sports Radio Station now impodent and no longer live and local.

unfair is true ..CLEAR CHANNEL SUCKS!

After all of this and Little Tommy is still employed?

There is no justice.

I would assume Tommy has a contract tied to J&J. There may also be clauses in the J&J contract protecting their support staff, not necessarily by name specifically, but in terms of providing some level of support people to the show. You wouldn't want to open that can of worms should something like that be the case.

Interestingly there was talk that CC was trying to execute the cuts during the inauguration festivities so that it would not hit the press, but that has not been the case, seeing that it is one of the most e-mailed articles on the SD Union-Tribune websites, as well as lots of media outlets around the country.
