Chet Coppock, Chicago sportscaster, 70

Coppock died on Wednesday from injuries suffered last week in a car accident in South Carolina. He was 13 days short of his 71st birthday.

Coppock was best known from his days as a sportscaster on WMAQ-TV Channel 5 in Chicago in the 1980s, and later as a pioneering sports talk host on Chicago radio. He also spent 6 years in Indianapolis at WISH-TV Channel 8 in the 1970s.

RIP, Chet. ;'(

In the late 80s before The Score went on the air "Coppock on Sports" was the only sports talk available on Chicago radio.

RIP!

Mike Murphy started on WLS when they switched to talk in 1989. IIRC, Mike North also had a show on WSBC around that time. Both became original "Scoreheads" when they signed on 820 in early 1992.

Chuck Swirsky also had a sports talk show on The Loop on Sunday nights in the early '80s, before Dr. Demento.

If you want to go way back Rick Weaver had a sports talk show on WBBM in the late 60s. I think it was on for an hour. Dave Berg had one on WIND a bit later. Pat Sheridan also had one for awhile. Coppock was not until the mid 80s, but at the time it was several hours long. Also, in the early 90s when WSCR only had a day license on 820 there was a show on at night on WMAQ-"The Sports Huddle" with various hosts.
