CHICAGO ARBITRON RATINGS: FEBRUARY 2011

The Drive had been holding fairly well now there seems to be some wobbling. Needless to say this is 6+ so the money demos are most likely very strong.

The ratings at WCFS are awful. Why do they let it continue?
It's going nowhere.

Can't help but wonder if it's next in line for a flip now that 1043 has.

A flip to what? Simulcast of WBBM, WSCR, or another format?

IMHO, 105.9 will likely flip to a simulcast of WBBM or WSCR. The question is which one can most enhance ad revenue. :)

That would be cool if either 670 or 780 simulcasted on FM.

Especially if they then realized the iboc on 670 and 780 is superfluous.

I could see a simulcast of WSCR, as CBS has put a number of sports talkers on FM in recent times....I could see WBBM on FM (a little less likely, IMO), because they put KCBS on FM106.9 in San Fransisco a couple of years ago.

WIAD/94.7 Fresh in DC isn't setting the world on fire, either....

If WSCR is simulcast on 105.9, it would be CBS' first heritage AM sports station to simulcast on FM. CBS' sports talkers in Boston, Pittsburgh and a few others were brand new stations and are only available on FM.

The KCBS all-news simulcast has made a top 5 station into the #1 station in the Bay Area. WBBM is #1 in Chicago but I still wouldn't rule out an FM simulcast. IMHO, a WBBM simulcast would put major pressure on WGN and WLS. :)

I think WSCR would be the first to simulcast. That should put more pressure on WMVP.

WXYT in Detroit added FM to the 1270 50 kw AM signal... it became all sports around 2005 or 2006, and had been talk with sports before that. So I'd say it qualified for "heritage" status, even if "heritage" is only a few years.

When I refer to CBS heritage sports stations, I'm refering to WFAN New York, WSCR Chicago and WIP Philadelphia in particular. 'FAN and 'SCR are on 50 kW blaster AM signals, WIP has a strong stick also, though not a blaster. Those three were the pioneering sports stations, dating back to the late 80s and early 90s. WFAN is the oldest, launching in 1987. :)

WSCR began on 820, moved to 1160 and did not move to the fulltime clear channel frequency of 670 until 2000.

WFAN was a creation of Emmis, who sold to Infinity who did not sell to CBS until nearly 10 years after the format started.

WIP transitioned to all sports in 1988, the year Ed Snider bought it. Snider sold later to Infinity and, like WFAN, came to CBS via the Infinity merger.

None were pioneered by CBS.

WXYZ / WXYT is, like WIP, a long-time talker that transitioned to sports and it is really an example of the same heritage... locally owned station that went to Infinity and eventually ended up being more and more sports focused.

If I recall correctly, there was some big deal made a while back about a programming expert coming to CBS that should help 105.9 or something....that obviously hasn't helped.

I don't think CBS will do another music format on 105.9. It would probably be a simulcast of WSCR - heritage or not, CBS has been doing sports talk on FM a lot in recent years, be they new stations or simulcasts of aging AMs. That seems more likely than BBM on FM IMO.

Thanks for the history refresher, David! Emmis started WFAN on directional 1050 and moved to blaster 660 when Emmis purchased the NBC stations in 1988. IMHO, that move made the all-sports format viable. :)

How long will CBS let "Fresh" tank before they give up and try something else?

Once again, their PD has given a timetable of about a year or so... and I believe we're halfway through that period.

@carolinaradio: ... though in due time, 105.9 could very well end up being Chicago's version of San Francisco's 106.9.

WBBM or WSCR simulcast--that is the question.
