FM News 101.1 STINKS! That's why they have such low ratings! Bring back Q101 already and leave news to those who know how to do it right (780/105.9).

Can you guarantee that they can draw an audience that will stick around for longer than 5 minutes before going back to Pandora and Sirius XM Alt Nation--if that long? Can you guarantee that they can get advertisers other than strip clubs and the Alley? Just what is it you love so much about a format that cannot be sold to today's advertisers?

The music! I have to agree, however with your statement concerning listenership. I personally use SiriusXM and Pandora to get my Rock fix. Unfortunately, that also means I'm one less listener to traditional radio when using these services. If there aren't enough advertisers available for the Alt. format, than I understand if it won't return. I can't see news lasting there with that terrible presentation and those horrible ratings, so a return to some form of music might be a good idea IMO.

Ignore Mark. He's a troll who likes to make generalizations about alternative stations and their listeners. Clearly, 101.1's listeners are the ones who keep cutting over to BBM and WGN, given it's 0.4 rating. And plenty of advertisers went with Q101, as it billed $13 million in it's final year. What's your precious chocolate and purses news station billing? I'd be surprised the number has 7 digits.

I don't work for Merlin. Besides, Walt Sabo left and took the chocolate with him a long time ago and 101.1's now a more mainstream take on all-news. And most people say that it takes at least a year for a news-talker to gain an audience--it's not an instant thing.

And as for revenue, unfortunately, the list of top-billing stations is just the Top 10. I would still bet that after KROQ and its 30-year heritage position in the format, the next modern rocker (the correct term, since commercial "alternative" stations haven't been alternative since college radio stopped playing Nirvana and Pearl Jam) would be way, way down the list.

And why do you ignore the REAL alternative stations--WNUR, WZRD, WLUW and WHPK?

You're little more than an industry sycophant if you think theMerlin FM News format, either in Chicago or New York, will ever gain traction.

Mark fails to realize that Emmis failed the format and the potential that could have made Q101 more money by tweaking the format and being relevant. Again, the crappy play list that Q101 used was the same playlist that was used at Emmis' station in St. Louis. The format CAN make money in Chicago if programed properly something Emmis chose not to do. There is no reason the hosting city for Lollapalooza, with a great music scene should have a void on the radio dials. I would rather listen to a live local station than an ipod as long as the playlist is relevant and the on air talent is decent (and not voice tracked).

I'm a little late on this thread, but what is with WLIT? Why does AC perform so terribly in Chicago? They do great at from November-February, but it starts falling apart after that.

It doesn't look like the "younger"/more upbeat approach they took has helped them any, nor has the flip of Fresh to WBBM.

I think it's because many of the stations place the same crap over and over and call it "AC". WTMX,WCFS, WLIT, WBBM,kissfm. I was thinking that lit would have been one of the candidates to go SJ. I don't think their new approach has help any at all. It sounds like any other AC station. There are several stations that are just above where WLFM was in the ratings. I believe LIT was one of them. Even Fresh struggled, like you said. I don't think it ever took off--even back when it was talk for a year.

Ok Mark, I'll assume you don't understand what today's mainstream alternative is. Those college stations are almost formatless or maybe you can call them a psychadelic acid trip at times. They kind of suck. As I mentioned in another thread alternative is WLUM or WRFF. I know there are a bunch of guys on Chicago radio and Media that are caught up in their own perspective of the world thinking it is universal but if done right like the stations I quoted above, the alternative station in Chicago will be successful. You don't play screaming blood music or some tinker toy or SKA music from the stations you quoted. That kind of pure crap only exists because someone in a closet has free CDs and their bills paid by the taxpayer (university) not because they are listener or advertiser driven. The closest thing to Alternative is WXRT but they have DJs that sound like WFMT SLLOOOWWW and then they mix in this garbage from Uncle Bob's garage sale 20 years ago. XRT is good for 15 minutes then sucks for 15.
