Chicken Soup For The Soul Entertainment Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

Dang I remember this group having a book franchise in the 1990's to 2000's. At one point this company's founders had lots of TV appearances to promote their books when this started.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, the entertainment company that operates Redbox, Crackle and other businesses, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection — after failing to pay employees and vendors for at least the past week.

The company’s June 28 bankruptcy petition was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. In the filing, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment listed total debts of $970 million and consolidated assets of $414 million as of March 31, 2024.

As of March 31, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment reported cash and equivalents of $4.9 million, which included $4.6 million of restricted cash.

Woah it turns out these books are still being sold today just not in the same way when they were at their peak in the 1990's and 2000's.

But dang they sell Pet food in addition to books, podcast and steaming TV service.

I'm surprised that there are still 27,000 Redbox kiosks out there. Somehow, I thought they had stopped being a significant factor in home entertainment at least 10 years ago. How many kiosks did Redbox have at its peak?
Dang I seen the Redbox kiosks at Safeway in my area. But if this was within the past 15 years sure given that BluRay was the then rising formats sure it would have been more active then.

Today that is would have to be less given that the stores in my area replaced the DVD section for Roku, Phones, Android TV devices, Apple TV as showrooms.

I don't know how many are still left, but here in the southeastern suburbs of Phoenix, there are still quite a few, notably at Circle K and Walmart stores. I haven't bothered with them in several years, but they're still there. For now. ;)

As of 12/31/2021, Redbox had 38,000 kiosks, according to its annual report. It seems that is close to the peak count. The highest reported number I could find was 43,500 in 2013, but that wasn't a primary source and probably included their shuttered Canada division.

I saw one outside the grocery store where I went on vacation. This was in a big shopping center that used to have a Walmart but now county offices have moved in.
