Chile on 47.9 MHz

I caught a music programming service, similar to Muzak (not quite a "radio station" per se), in Santiago, Chile, on 47.9 MHz, from South Florida.

I was quite shocked....however, this may not be as rare as I make it out.

Has anyone ever logged this one?

Oops....sorry.....this wasn't E-skip AFAIK....had to be TEP (trans-equatorial propagation) or F2 layer skip. 4,159 miles.... :)

List of Muzak Stations on the air in 2010 in Chile ... There is a station in Santiago on 72.6 MHz (3kW) as well as numerous other cities...

http://www.qsl.net/ce3sad/6m.html It's time to start monitoring FM and VHF frequencies again!

That's how I found it! Someone sent me that link!! :D

As was pointed out, that was TEP, not Es. Now that the Solar Cycle is picking up, TEP will become much more common outside South Florida.

The "Muzak" station to which you refer is used as a bit of a beacon by radio amateurs on 6m (50 MHz). 47.9 is the lowest frequency; but there are a few others to just below 50MHz. When conditions are good, they can get quite strong.

I have heard these stations in Memphis a few times, but it's pretty rare here. Kinda odd, though.

Heard it in Idaho a couple times. Then again BBC's Channel 1 audio would show up occasionally too.
Hams have lots of fun with 6 meters 50 MHz skip.

Thanx guys for bumping the thread....I have built a homemade 48 MHz antenna & put it up tonight, because Sherlock was showing TEP. However, nothing here.... :(

Also, I work evenings on weekdays, and I see that the TEP always seems to show up around 8 pm. Norm?

Ya think it'll come back for me again? Also, are the Chileans 24 hours? Maybe they are off air right now....

Yes. TEP has been ramping up the past few weeks -- the Solar Flux Index is holding in the 130s after briefly peaking at 190 last week. Further, the timing is right as TEP tends to peak around the solstices. So expect more in the near-term.

You're in the right place. The further south you go, it gets exponentially better. The South Florida guys have been getting some almost daily over the past couple of weeks. Here in Memphis, I have only heard TEP a couple of times this year -- and it has been brief and fairly weak.

8pm is just a bit late. "Afternoon TEP" (as opposed to Evening TEP which is a different mechanism) is called that because that's when it happens. For me, TEP will normally drop off around 6pm (7pm East Coast). Your actual mileage may vary.

But as was pointed out, 50 MHz is a LOT of fun. It's challenging, but when you start hearing signals from 5000 miles away (last Saturday, I was working Buenos Aires), it's really cool.
