Chinese on 1320 AM

During the night this past week, I heard Chinese language programming on 1320 AM here (I'm in Iowa). I assumed it was probably an AM station from Toronto, CJMR, that has multi-language programming. But I checked out their web site, and most of the programming during the night hours seems to be a mix of South Asian and ethnic programming other than Chinese. I guess that means I probably heard the 1320 from Vancouver, CHMB? If so, that's a first for me and I'd consider it a catch. Have others had any experience with this station? Is it a regular in the western half of the US and Canada?

I also heard CBR 1010 (CBC) and CFAC 960 ("The Fan") this week, both from Calgary, which were first time catches for me. Not as extraordinary, since a number of Saskatchewan stations are regulars at nighttime here.

Regular here 80 miles S of Vancouver, but I'm not sure about Iowa.

CHMB definitely broadcasts in Chinese and is a regular (as are most Vancouver
stations) here in North Idaho.
At 50KW, Iowa certainly sounds plausible.

CHMB airs an English ID at the top of every hour. Listen for it......

In my nighttime 1320 experiences, i've always heard a simulcast of CJOY from Guelph, ON. This was a couple years ago, so I suppose it could be different now.

Looking at Radio Locator, both stations have lobes that would favor Iowa. I'd say stay on this one. Vancouver would be one heck of a catch even in your location.

I've been trying Vancouver for awhile now. So far, Calgary and SLC are the closest i've made it.

How's 1130 at your location?

CKWX has made the trip to Nashville a few times -- that's quite a haul from here!

CJOY from Guelph...or CJMR's sister station, CJYE 1250 from Oakville? I don't see simulcasts of either showing on CJMR's current schedule (http://www.cjmr1320.ca/program.html), but I can certainly believe a CJYE simulcast during unsold hours, since they're coming from the same studios.

First of all, CJOY is on 1460. A fact that's more than apparent to me when I stay at a hotel about a mile from their stick when I'm visiting a couple of customers in the area! ;D (At least its a good listen.)

Now back o 1320.... I agree, CHMB may be completely plausible for you. The east-west path between the pacific northwest and the midwest has been unusually good lately. For example, I've been DX-ing for over 40 years and had never heard anything from BC. Then a little over a month ago, CKWX came rolling in before dawn one morning here in northern Illinois. And I've heard it about a half dozen times since. I can also tell you from my travels to the northwest that CHMB has a very good local signal day/night in and around Vancouver as well as adjacent parts of Washington state. (OTOH, I find CJMR's signal to be "unremarkable" in and around the greater Toronto area).

So yeah...my guess is that CHMB might take a little effort, but should STILL be doable in Iowa...and it's probably just as likely to hear them there as CJMR.

Sorry. I should have been more specific. I was referring to CJYE 1250 from Oakville, ON. I remember hearing their simulcast on CJMR 1320 in the early morning hours a couple of years ago.

1130 in my location is mostly WBBR from New York and KWKH from Shreveport. I read recently that KWKH's nighttime reception in the Midwest was due to a directional pattern malfunction and that it's fixed now. May be a prime time to try for CKWX!

Try for CKWX right before your sunrise. That's your best bet when the east coast starts getting basked in daylight.

Now I want to listen to 1130 more often, maybe I could catch CKWX here. I've still been hearing KWKH at night here in Iowa lately, although I don't really know about their pattern issue. I also variously pick up WBBR from NYC and a little of KFAN from the Twin Cities tonight, none of which is a very listenable signal. No WISN -- I've heard that their signal to their southwest is extremely limited at night. Still, there's a lot going on on 1130 around this part of the country.

As posted in another thread. I was driving home from the Milwaukee airport one evening a couple of months back. At a point about 8-10 miles southwest of the WISN stick, they powered down....and disappeared totally! 10kw, ten miles away, gone! And in an area with good ground conductivity, no less.

As for CKWX....Radioman is absolutely right. Try for it just before sunrise. That's when I've been hearing it. In fact, I've snagged it a couple of times just after sunrise.

I've been finding there's a fine line where I live about 30 miles north of Chicago. The problem for me if I wait too close to sunrise or just after is that WDFN dominates. I try to catch it between east coast sunrise & Detroit sunrise which I think is 6:45AM CST. It can be caught after that if conditions are just right and you have patience.
