Chips will return as a 2017 movie

Hopefully, the two characters die in a fiery wreck at the end so that no further consideration is given to jump-starting another "franchise."

Erik Estrada will likely be making a cameo appearance in this. He probably needs it, as lately he has been touring native american casinos with his game show. Or so I understand...

Eric Estrada has been starring in Spanish language telenovelas (soap operas) for years, and has done quite well for himself.
 
The writer's own description reveals that it is not going to be much of a flick. Developmentally challenged writer?

I believe he did only one of any importance, for Televisa, "Dos Mujeres y Un Camino" starting in 1993. It featured Estrada as a Tijuana truck driver in a main role. The part was perfect for Estrada's "pocoho"-style Spanish which was apparently not mainstream enough for general Mexican novela work. I don't believe he has had any further principal roles on telenovelas.
 
The preview I saw made it look like they turned it into a stupid comedy. My wife and I took one look at that and both said no thanks. Why do they feel like they have to do things like that for a show that was more serious than comedy?
Treat the concept decently and people that liked the original will watch it.

21 Jump Street - also an "action-comedy" from a dramatic TV series - made $200 million. Maybe that's the reason. Besides, CHiPS is the kind of 70s or 80s TV show that is rife with satirical possibilities.
