Choices for streaming

We've been solicited by several streaming providers. Which ones are better in terms of reliability, features, and cost?

Currently using streamgeeks.com. 128k in house stream for network sites $25 a month. 128k w 50 clients $30 a month. Control, panel, pop up player for website. Like the pricing because it sets a limit on users and not the magical gb figure that may be exceeded once or twice during the month.

Reliability? The best are probably: streamguys.com liquidcompass.com and streamtheworld.com.

Features? Probably streamaudio.com...they price based upon bandwidth used or concurrent users....and now offer Flash players and AACplus streaming for less than their competitors. Their players aren't pretty, but very functional....they also throw in podcast hosting and charge nothing extra for RIAA reporting tools, etc...and are now getting into the iPhone radio app business. $500 to get a basic iPhone app.

Streamaudio is loads cheaper. Liquid Compass and Streamtheworld? Loads more expensive.

I recommend fast-serv, www.fast-serv.com

Randy there has excellent customer service and a reliability to be proud of. He has data centers in both San Diego and Ashburn, VA.

With regards iPhone apps. IMHO they now get lost in the quagmire of 100,000 apps. With iPhone OS3, they can natively stream MP3 and AAC (note it will play AAC+ but loses the HE-AAC component). If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch you can try my formatted iPhone website at www.2ngradio.com/iphone.

It can be bookmarked and look like an app, and they can read email etc whilst listening to the station.

Streamaudio is what I've been happily using for years. They are cheap and extremely reliable. My non-comm runs almost 200 people at times during peaks and we used to have a local do our streaming with lots of issues. I went from having lots of trouble to almost no trouble. We use the "shoutcast" streaming that also translates it in to mulitiple formats so there's lots of options for the end user. The flash player is a great option for those that can't get other things to run. (just pause and start again if it glitches).

Meaning it doesn't support HE-AAC v1/v2. The fact that it will play the AAC part of the HE-AAC (the low-band) is a consequence of HE-AAC codec being inherently backwards compatible with AAC.

Just as HE-AAC v2 is backwards compatible with HE-AAC v1 (but then you loose stereo and get only mono) and AAC (you only get the low-band).
