So if Y100 and Power are battling it out for the CHR audience, how does someone like Jamz, Coast, DJ, 939 work into the equation. I can't believe that six stations are going after the same audience and someone actually expects to win do they? I've been listening more to Coast and they seem to be headed right at Y with only a handful of songs that stick out and remind me they are really an ac station.

And how much longer will CC let 939 play so close to Y100? I cannot believe how similar the two are.
 
i think c.c should dump 93.9 mia and replace it with dance/ evolution.. my .02

In very simplified terms, Jamz is an Urban station with a predominantly Black core. Power is rhythmic and has a predominantly Hispanic Core, while Y 100 is closer to a pure CHR with a non-Hispanic white core, but lot's of Hispanics, too.

Coast is Hot AC. Again, a slightly different target. It has essentially no overlap with co-owned Jamz, so it is a beautiful fit in the cluster.

DJ is a wannabe. It aims at Power, and has not been successful.

As to MIA overlapping with Y 100, look at the synergy between Z100 and KTU in New York. Despite the similarities, they both succeed in a major way.
 
I think people are overstating how CHR-like WMIA is. It is a pretty run-of-the-mill Clear Channel "90s to Now" station. They play a lot of 90s and early 2000s songs. While they play some current CHR music, they do not have the same playlist as Y-100. Y does not play nearly the number of throwbacks, etc. that MIA plays.

Scott, how would you describe WMIA? Is it more hot adult contemporary or is rhythmic adult a more accurate description?

MIA is a updated version of the Rhythmic AC format. Very safe mainstream rhythmic tunes (no rap), with some crossover hits. Everything can be played in the office. Songs that everyone can sing along to. ;D

It also does away with most of the 70's & 80's rhythmic product.

As David said, very similar synergy to the CC NY stations.

If you like the original MIA check out WMOV Norfolk (also a CC station).
 
dont know if anyone has noticed but MIA's new tagline is, Todays hits* its no longer 90's to now
 
How can MIA be called Today's Hits when they are playing Michael Jackson Black or White right now? That's not Today. And image wise if Y is All The Hits, then why are they Today's Hits. Someone explain this crazy to me.

Not uncommon for a station (Rhythmic AC) to dip back into the gold catalog (certain songs). Keep in mind, Y100 is CHR very current intensive, and a younger demo.

A 35 year old female will sing along to a Michael Jackson tune (she was in her teens when it was a hit). The 18-25 year old will now probably listen to Y-100 or power 96.

That 35 year old likes today's hits, but only certain songs.

I agree with the other posters; WMIA is definitely a rhythmic AC station. I have not sampled WKTU all that much, but I'd imagine that their playlists are pretty similar. WMIA plays some older pop songs that might not be considered all that rhythmic. For example, I have heard some early 2000s Kelly Clarkson. I am not so sure if WKTU would play some of the older Kelly Clarkson stuff.
 
Kelly Clarkson, Adele, Katy Perry, Train, Maroon5, Gotye are pop artists on most Rhythmic AC stations, and do well on the format.

I wish WMIA would sound more like KTU in NY. They started out that way -- kind of an oldies/disco/dance flavor. Now, they are just plane old AC. There's not much difference between Coast and MIA.

I wish they would go back to more of what they sounded like when they first went on the air.
 
I would venture to guess that KTU is more "rhythmic" than MIA. To use my previous example, my guess is that KTU hardly plays any early 2000s Kelly Clarkson. Someone who has heard KTU more recently than I, please correct me if I am wrong.
 
MIA was great when it first started out. And around the time I began to lose interest in it, SHE popped up. Now SHE is becoming stale. Seems to be a pattern (with me at least) with Clear Channel stations. At least BIG 105.9 is consistent more or less (although they could improve, why in the world do they play the 45 version of Billy Joel's "My Life" (while other local stations like Majic play the album version). I would think that a Classic Rock station would be about the album versions (which usually BIG plays). Very strange.
 
I just turned on 97.3 and they are saying the NEW Coast and todays best music. Did I miss something, when did this happen?

In trying to think of the sound that WMIA should adopt, I strongly encourage everyone to check out Hot 96.9/Boston. It streams on iHeartRadio. The format would be ideal for South Florida, but perhaps a similarly formatted station here could focus more on Dance tracks. Hot 96.9 plays some current Rhythmic hits, but focuses its format more on Rhythmic hits of the early 90s-mid 2000s. If anyone has heard this station, let me know what you think.
