CHR Coming Back to Augusta National?

D

Pardon the golf reference (The Masters IS only a couple months away), but it appears that CHR is coming back to Augusta, GA. According to All Access, the Beasley AC station there began stunting about an hour or so ago with a loop of that annoying laugh at the beginning of "Feel Good Inc" by the Gorillaz.

Thoughts, anyone?

Sweet! Let's hope the Augusta radio dial will indeed be welcoming back CHR/Pop radio tonight.

Earlier this week we found out Ft. Wayne has regained a CHR/Pop outlet (Wild 96.3), so it would be nice to see another one pop up in Augusta.

I don't think WZNY Augusta was doing bad when it changed from CHR-Pop to Country.

According to yes.com only 1 of WNHT's last 48 songs was on the Alternative/Active Rock/Rock or Hot AC side.

Welcome the new 98-HD to Augusta.

The stunting has ended and the former WSLT (Lite 98.3) is now WHHD (98-HD). Here is a post from deejayryan from the Georgia board with more details:
____________________________________________________________________________

Tell all your friends! Welcome TOP-40 back to Augusta! And it's HD!

WHHD (Clearwater) is now Top-40 "98-HD"

Just heard NICKLEBACK go into SEAN-PAUL! Then KELLY CLARKSON go into
P-DIDDY!!!

Will they bring back:

OPEN HOUSE PARTY?
CARSON DALY?
RICK DEES?
RYAN SEACREST?

NOBODY SCREW THIS ONE UP, PLEASE!!

(very happy, indeed)!!

And me as well. As I said on the Georgia board, let's hope that Beasley doesn't screw this up.

No, they weren't, but thanks to Clear Channel (and Cumulus before them), the station was slowly gutted to where it was just a shell of it former self.

It astonded me that both companies didn't try to freshen up the on-air sound. They were still using rehashed Brian James sweepers and JAM's Z-World jingles from the mid-90's untill just prior to the format flip. They did add a new VO talent, but by then it was too little-too late.

If you think that Y-105's story was bad, you should hear what Cumulus did to AC WBBQ.

They played All American Rejects at 7:40, Green Day around 5, and DHT around 4. They're also giving a lot of spins to Gwen Stefani's "Crash"

Someone brought up Brian James... let me go on the record as saying that there is absolutely nothing wrong with having him as the voice of a CHR, even given his age. The catch is being able to produce him right and write good copy for him to "get into" and have fun reading. When you can do that, you will catch him at his best.

On another subject, does anyone know what 98-HD is doing for staff? Are they starting over? I know of a couple solid young talents that would do very well in a market of Augusta's size that are free agents right now.<P ID="signature">______________

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT...

The sweepers I made at WZNy when I worked there from 1995-2000 were STILL in use right before they got a new v/o guy in late 2003.

And ya'll are right... Clear Channel and Cumulus ruined WZNY. We had local morning shows (myself and a variety of co-hosts), we did LOCAL promotions and had LOCAL listeners winning big LOCAL prizes.

Then Cumulus got us, Gary Pizzati became the market manager, and it was "cluster, cluster, cluster" and "sell sell sell." Promised talent raises and ratings bonuses were gone, and soon jocks (myself included) left.

Then CC cookie-cuttered the playlist (hip hop doesn't work in EVERY market 24/7 on a CHR back then), they muddled through with a PD who paid no attention to imaging (hence the stale sweepers and jingles far beyond their usefulness) and promotions were all national. They dropped local morning talents for syndicated.

Augusta lost it's embrace from Y105 and Y105 lost Augusta.

Some clarification re: Brian James.

I wanted to clear up something just in case I was misunderstood in my earlier post. I wasn't putting down Brian James work, I was putting down the fact that Y-105 didn't make an attempt to freshen up the sweepers or the jingles until it was too late. And in all fairness, it isn't programming's fault that the IDs weren't updated constantly, it's an issue where you're at the mercy of the budgeting department every quarter. Since programming usually gets the short end of the stick, guess what's the first to go?

FWIW: Some of the best work that Brian James did was when he was at WFLZ/Tampa. It's on the Power Pig tribute site:
