CHR in 2011

What do you think will happen with music in 2011?
Will Hip-Hop continue to dominate?
Will Pop continue to grow ie: Bieber, Gaga, etc?
Will country still crossover?
Will Rock acts return?
What stations do you think will flip?
What stations do you think will crossover to CHR on and off?
What markets do you think will gain stations?
What markets do you think will lose stations?

I'd like to see more balance on CHR as far as pop, hip-hop and rock are concerned.

Apparently, 105.7 Crush FM in Albany will be a CHR/Rhythmic, not a CHR/Rock... so Albany might lose 102.3 by year's end and 96.3 about a year or so later as 105.7 is the strongest of the three signals. Townsquare Media made a good call here in terms of format, now they just need to program it well

As for here in Albany, I predict 105.7 will start to lure in more 102.3 and 96.3 listeners with its stronger signal and programming, while 92.3 takes on more of a rock lean, such as MCR, Orianthi and Paramore and focuses less on hip-hop and harder rhythmic artists.

As for genres, I think hip-hop and R&B will still be around, and rock might make a comeback in 2011... country will have less influence as 2011 goes on.

If CC gets Kiss less VTed and brings back local people into the station I think they can do just fine. This Premium Choice stuff isn't working. Crap Channel didn't think this Premium Choice would backfire, well it did.

Speaking of 92.3, they really need to get rid of that "FLY" moniker. Worst name for a CHR... the station is okay though.

Lol that's tagline cracks me up whenever I go to Jacksonville and hear it - can't believe people in Jacksonville think it sounds normal ;D

For me, it's much better though than CHRs that just go by their call letters, with no nickname/tagline at all, like WNOK/Columbia SC

I think using a station's call letters is just as effective as using a single letter. Look at 101.3 KDWB Minneapolis or 93.3 FLZ Tampa. They're brands, and the same is true for WAPE. When someone hears the phrase "The Big Ape" in Jax, locals immediately associate it with pop music/hit music, or they're LOCAL radio station.
Fly 92, which takes its name from its call letters is not all that different from KIIS-FM calling itself 102.7 Kiss FM.

I just think it's lazy lol - it works just as well though for stations that have been around a long time (WNCI and WKRZ are at/near the top of their markets)

Yup, they dropped the Power Pig handle when they evolved from Rhythmic CHR to CHR/Pop
FLZ was hands down the best sounding CHR/Pop station in the country in the second half of the 90s, and before that a brilliant and well executed crossover Rhythmic station

When I first heard of "The BIG APE" I was like "WTF??? They call their station the APE??"

I later worked at that station for a few years... you can't argue with success. It's a brilliant name and everyone up and down the SE coast KNOWS WAPE.

They still do that trademark APE yell at the top of every hour.

I really like how WFLZ is playing Get Higher by Paper Tongues (in heavy rotation I think) - other stations need to start copying them ;D

Those call letters go back to 1948, when the station was founded by Frank Lloyd York.

I don't think Fly is that bad. The handle I never understood was Omaha's Sweet 98. A successful station back in the 80s and 90s, but it kinda made it sound like a Soft AC station.

Rock is not likely to make a comeback, at least not in the first half of 2011. Rock's popularity has been diminishing for quite some time now. A couple of things kept it afloat with the Pop audience in the last 5-10 years including crossover EMO Rock acts, Myspace, and the popularity of the game Guitar Hero.

I don't think Hip Hop is saturating the format either - CHR has been moving away from both Rock and Hip Hop on many fronts. What you end up with is a pure Pop sound on CHR, and pure Pop has a lot of Rhythmic and Dance elements in it.

Country has been the most-listened to music format since 1992, and ranks second overall to News-Talk, which replaced it as the most-listened to format in the summer of 2008. I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

CHR/Pop ranks sixth currently, and has enjoyed a renaissance over the past three years; the format has also benefitted from a host of newly-launched top 40 stations in numerous markets, largely driven in part by the spectacular success of 97.1 AMPRadio (KAMP-FM) here in Los Angeles in February of 2009.
