CHR IN MOBILE, POST-WABB

I was just listening to Jack-FM a few minutes ago and they played a liner saying "Be listening tomorrow night at midnight for some changes on 104.1". That would make sense because I've read other posts where people were thinking Journey 100 would flip or Jack-FM. I never thought Journey would flip because it's still new and it targets Pensacola. I always thought the logical station to flip would be Jack-FM because they target Mobile. This is their chance to take the ball and run with it, which is what it sounds like they are going to do. It will be interesting to see what happens.

So tomorrow night at midnight we will not only lose WABB, but it looks like we will be losing Jack-FM too. I wonder what the new station will be called? I don't really see them returning it to "Hot 104" again.

My guess a song from the 70s... likely the one they signed on with when they went Top 40...

The dj on air today said they would start in the morning playing songs from 2012 working their way back thru to the 70s.

I'd say "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" by Bob Dylan. First song on WABB-FM in 1973.

FROM 1973 and a good candidate: "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John.

Also, we have to consider the classic "American Pie" by Don McLean. That's a good way to kill about 8 minutes and clear the studio.

I second that nomination. Give a nod to the "good ol' days" that some of us have a hard time remembering. But, as they say, "If you remember the '70s you weren't really there." :)

Do you mean Anticipation by Carroll King? With the hook line in "These are the Good Old Days."
 
I'll definitely try to stay up past midnight for this and record it. As much as I'm going to enjoy them going back in time, I have a feeling the core of today's young listeners will be tuned out by the time they reach the late 90s. It'll be interesting to see if Cumulus drops 104.1 early or waits till tomorrow.
 
Based on the registered domains, 104.1 will be changing it's name to 104.1 Hits or 104.1 Hit Music...what? Seriously? What?????? 107.3 Hit Music Now has that name????!!?!? WHATTT???? CUMULUS? You probably want to get another name.

"Bingo 104.1 Atmore - Mobile" with the Creek Indians being their major advertiser.

Stations have been registering domain names as a swerve for over a decade now. It only cost like 8$ to buy one for a year and confuse people.

"All The Hits" is the standard positioner at Cumulus CHR's. That's probably why they reserved all those domains with the word "Hits" in them. They'll probably be something like, "All The Hits 104.1 WABD." The station I used to work for that's now owned by Cumulus, by the way, is "All The Hits Q-106.1" while it was "THEEEE Hit Music Channel Q-106.1" when I was there.
 
Okay, I'm somewhat familiar with laws in Alabama because my ass still hurts from being screwed in 1991. It is illegal to register or use a dba company name that could be easily confused with another company in the same business. Now 107.3 is licensed in Florida and 104.1 is licensed in Alabama so it may not apply in this case. But in my case I can not work in Alabama because of some hick being smarter than I thought he was back in 1991. I've figured a loophole, but I would be risking my right to ever work in Florida again if I got in trouble and it resulted in me getting caught. In (my)25+ years owning a (40 year old) business I've never gotten in trouble. Most of my competition gets in trouble at least once a year. I know my stuff but I may also just be lucky.

The FCC licensed WABD (which IMHO is too close to WABB but that another tread). Being "licensed" by a branch of the Federal Government most likely trumps Alabama laws. In the MTM verses WKRP case the radio station "won" by basicly because their FCC Call letters were WKRP. IIRC The TV folks eventually did make a set of jingles for WKRC Cincinnati. WKRP's Johnny Fever was really Bobby Harper at WQXI Atlanta. WQXI was a stop on WABB's former Scott Shannon path to Z100 where he "perfected"* CHR in NYC.

* Perfected" is probably the wrong word but worst to first in market #1 does make station owners happy.
 
I think I was trying to say that WABD couldn't call it's self WABB and then rush through the WABD Atmore Mobile TOH ID. I hurt myself last night, so I'm a little out of it right now and can't remember much about what I was thinking yesterday afternoon. As long as WABB is a registered corporation in working in Alabama... FCC call letter must trump that, forget it.
 
Still on autopilot, but WABD is sounding a little better. No Q-100 mentions, at least!
