CHR Mornings in Panama City

Curious as to how the CHR war in Panama City is shaping up, especially with respect to AM Drive. I'm familiar with Kramer on Island 106 from his days in Savannah. He did solid on-air work here and I'm interested to find out how the upstart morning show is faring against the syndicated (and solid) Kidd Kraddick on WPFM.

By the way, does PFM really not have a website? How could they possibly find that acceptable in 2008? What's their overall on-air presentation like compared to that of WILN?

PFM's parent company doesn't even have a website... just a coming soon page that's been up there for over a year!

Wonder if they even have internet at their studios... I guess you gotta cut something if you're bleeding money as fast as some on this board indicate...

I wish we could learn the truth about Double 0 and especially the fate of WPFM. I've offered $5M for the cluster
on here before (Charlie can help me write the check with his $4.999999999999M sitting in his vault.) For all the
talk we all talk, I am surprised no one has responded to this post. I wish I had the answers, but am to far away
to have a clue. Seems like Magical screws up alot and Double O is not seeing the opportunity to take control.
I will say this, their team, from what I heard originally, at Double 0 was a bunch of seasoned radio professionals.
Seems like the very words seasoned, radio and professionals is a financial kiss of death. Certainly PC is an
near-impossible market after CC takes their ratings/sales out of the market. But, there seems to be NO fight
to exceed expectations from "the little guys." It's ashame. And yes, WPFM should have a website.

Can anyone even tell us how the station sounds (technically and is it ever live, VT, dead air central, boring,
bland, same old repeated liners, music,auto-pilot or is there a bit of personality?)

Hey Tibbs, you'd better back off of that 5M offer unless you want to overpay. You may be thinking that the stick values, plant and equipment may be worth at least that BUT you need to take into consideration that rates have not increased (wrong direction) while expenses (power, etc) are suddenly going up, uP, UP!

Except for a very select few markets in the US, rates have gone DOWN, DOwn, down, so recovery financially is going to take WORK. Clients must be re-educated, not to mention sales people. So take care before throwing cceng's money around.

Everything has a price. Way overpriced, back in the day when nobody was on the dial, this would be a bargain or even considered expensive. Today, way overpriced. It ain't what it used to be.............

I was talking about the cluster----. You guys are right. I was going off old thoughts. Now, if they'd throw in the Magical
garbage and pay me $6M for taking that, then you maybe.

Having not thought about what the two companies stations would be worth, any thoughts? I am sure the facilities are
in dire need of replacement.

You're right --- worthless or worse. Thanks for getting my head out of the sand. Memories are always better than
the real thing...

Welcome to the big league board. You might get an answer within the year. Rob? Research this and get
back to musicman, please. Wish I could help. But, I think neither stations are available live online.

based on what i hear, syndicated crap.

stations i've logged

107.9 unless you think texas is local now.. do ya? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kid_Kraddick
95.1 (didn't hear their moanin show -like the format)
93.5 (bob and tom? QRM from 93.3)
97.7 (local)
105.1..ahhh rob plays more i hae yet to hear 1/3rd of my mp3/.wav collection on that station.
ISLAND (local?)
103.5 (sounded local)
SUNNY (- sounded local)
99.3 heard a JOCK their saying he's #1 in chicago and in cleveland..(QRM from 99.5)
92.5 sounded local
101.1 - possibly not
100.1 - too much QRM from KROCk

my thought about it is from what i heard, needs to be more edgy.
and, quit having sponsors for every damn thing they do. "welcome to the panama city toyota studios on bob fm he plays everything" (as an example)

Lot of clutter out here in the Redneck Riviera. Am curious, how many of these are Class C stations, by the looks several are on a Class C frequency? If so, who has the monster stick and what is the highest HAAT for any of these stations. I remember when WPFM had a monster signal but was forced to drop height and/or power to accomodate another 107.9 in Alabama.

nope vadar, PFM has always been 100 kw and their antenna has been at the same height on the channel 7 tower just east of the intersection on US231 and SR20 about 25 mi NE of Panama City....they have not reduced power for another 107.9 station...in fact, I just checked the FCC database to make sure before I posted this.....their signal SHOULD be the same as always....but I don't know if their transmitter is putting out the licensed power or not....haven't set foot in that transmitter building in over 12 or 14 years

there are really no "monster" sticks in Panama City

WFSY is about 1100 feet, WPAP is about 900 feet, WFLF is about 950 feet, WPFM is about 800 ft, WYYX is about 800 feet....all are 93-100 kw....there is basically no difference in the coverage between 93 and 100 kw...a mile or less

Everyone else is below 500 ft

I define a monster stick as anything over about 1200 or 1300 ft

Hmmm! That's about the last time the bank balance showed a positive cash flow over there. Sadly, what a joke. If you were a little birdy that
won the $10 Million Dollar "I can only buy WPFM lottery" and keep the rest of the money...how much would you pay fur it, Charlie? Remember,
you HAVE to make an offer on this game.

I thought the signal was weird for about five to seven years. I used to be able to pick it up on the way down 331, etc. pretty far away.
Is the signal that weak along Front Beach Road?

Haven't ventured down west (or East if your standung upside down) of PCB as of late have you Mr.Engineer about Town?
WROB clocks in at 23,750 HAAT. How many strobey's do you max out with down in the commoners section (anything but Navarre.)???
You could have stuff like that if you had picked the right intern. Mapquest out.

Thanks Charlie and Tibbs. CCEng, I agree, a monster stick would have to be over 1200 ft. Any of those in our area (panama-pensacola)? How about in Jax area? While we're at it, who has the highest stick in Florida, the best overall signal, the cleanest sound, etc......

Anyone, bueller, anyone?????????

a couple of the Pensacola stations 99.9, WYCL, WTKX, WMEZ, and WXBM (I may be forgetting someone) are on the large combined sites at the "antenna farm" over in Baldwin County AL....WGLF in Tallahassee is on a pretty good stick but I can't remember how high....I know it is at least 1100 ft...probably more.

One of the main reasons that stations "seem" to not get out as far as they did 15 years ago has to with the interference level....more and more stations have signed on...epecially after Docket 80-90.....and 1st and 2nd adjacent channel interference has increased dramatically giving a perception that the station is not getting out like it used to. Hell, when WGLF went on their big stick many years ago you could listen to them fairly good in Panama City.....believe it or not, strong stations several channels away can make your radio less sensitive on a given frequency because of "front end overload"....

musicman, since no one is answering your question, I will. this is my first time posting so i hope i do this right...

i moved to panama city (as a military relocation with my husband) from CA. i worked in radio sales for a short time down here. at first, i listened to kid kradick. I hated island 106. the DJs were awful (esp. the morning show), the music was horrible...107.9 was a lot better. about 6 months ago, i turned on kramer because my friends were talking about his show, and I haven't turned off island 106 since. he and holly are so funny. I like theirtopics, i like the good music (maybe sometimes its too much tho). It beats kid kradick. me and my kids listen to it everyday. it gets kinda racy at times later on in the show, but it always keeps me listening. I don't even listen to 107.9 any more. k+h do a great job. also i like when I see them around town. it's better than anything local here (not that that is saying much) and I like it better than ryan seecrest too!

I would personally never run Kraddick. While he does a solid show, in many respects, I feel like he talks about Dallas and doesn't hide it well enough to be a syndicated show that will work well in many smaller markets where the audience would be able to pick up on the Dallas references and be insulted by it. Is that more than likely a minority of markets? Sure, but even one market is too many, in that respect.

Musicman:

My opinion on mornings in PC for what its worth...

Island 106 - morning show has potential but too self serving the few times I listened "find holly a date...etc.etc.." breaking alot of radio rules, but time will tell. Serves a real young audience..

Wave 100 - John Tesh. all day every day...lame not local, liners dropped in. Ratings are good now but in time will give way to better programming. (Bob?)

Talk 101.1 - local from 6a-9a - Bertie Higgins or someone like that, he is a little wimpy and wishy washy but does address the local good ole boys over 5 and say whatever it is they want him to say. (IMO)

97.7 - Lex and Terry syndicated

PFM - 107.9 Kidd Kraddick - funny at times, good show, but not local

103.5 - Kat Kountry - local, but not too memorable they try real hard...

Sunny 98.5 - Logan and Kathy - local but super cheesy, still does contests from the 80's, "watercooler trivia and battle of the sexes", good benchmarks in their day, but hey this is Panama City...and if there is no competition why put any effort into making yourself better. Get the paycheck and bleed the radio money pit until you have to move on.

WPAP - Doctor Shane - (see Sunny 98.5) with the exception that Doctor Shane gets paid big bucks and has new car dealer testimonials in his pocket once every 12 months or so. Rightly so with those ratings huh?

Arrow 95.9 John Boy and Billy ( see WPFM)

Bob 105.1 - a lot of buzz in the market, a lot of people listening in shops, salons, etc.

94.5 Fox News - Bob & Tom (see Arrow 95.9)

99.3 (see 95.5)

There are few random FM's and AM's that I left out...
