CHR/POP PANEL CHANGES

Effective with airplay of the week of 4/10 thru 4/16, the CHR/Pop panel is going to have four new stations, as WKTU/New York and WDTW/Detroit move from Rhythmic and KWNW/Memphis and WPLW/Raleigh are added as new reporters.

The changes were already implemented last week:

Party 93.1 Las Vegas (Neon Trees is Top 20)
97.7 Party San Antonio (Neon Trees, Daughtry, and Kings of Leon are on the playlist so its not strictly Rhythmic Pop)
Hot 101.9 Santa Rosa

I'm surprised a couple of stations from the Hot A/C panel weren't moved. Specifically WBZZ Star 100.7 Pittsburgh (where Wiz Khalifa is Top 10) and 95.1 WAYV Atlantic City.

This doesn't surprise me. A majority of the stations on the Rhythmic and Hot AC panels have acting more pop-ish and dancy lately, so this would make sense and you can expect more changes down the pipeline. However, I feel that Mediabase should create another new CHR panel for Pop/Dance-flavored stations like WKTU and KTFM.

What about Mix 106.5 in Baltimore? They are the epitome of one format reporting as something else.

Seems like CBS has identity crises at some of their stations (Star 100.7 is just as bad)....

I think there's a lot of pressure from the labels to keep anything remotely/marginally Hot AC on the HAC panel - Britney, Rihanna, Kesha, Chris Brown, etc. have to do well on the pop charts (it's almost like their recording contracts depend on it) - I don't think the same is true for most HAC bands

I think the problem with Mix 106.5/Baltimore is that it still uses Hot AC-only tracks alongside rhythmic-pop tracks - Hey Baby (Drop It To The Floor) by Pitbull is being spun 45 times per week, but Falling In, the brand new single by Lifehouse is being spun 43 times per week - so it's literally a CHR/Hot AC hybrid, and I guess labels (or CBS) would rather have them report to HAC

Just looked up WBZZ/Pittsburgh, and yeah, it's definitely CHR IMO - why is it that 90% of "misplaced" stations are owned by CBS? (Rhythmics reporting to CHR, CHRs reporting to Hot AC, Hot AC's reporting to AC, etc.)

Check out PARTY/Las Vegas. As of yesterday their music changed. They now play pop acts such as the Script as well as harder rhythmic songs they wouldn't have played before...or waited longer to add.

And I've just checked on 93.1 The Party Las Vegas, and it looks they're now full-blown CHR/Pop :)
They must have completed their transition/evolution in the past few days. Their tagline on the hompage now says "All the Hits", the music mix is much more current-based, and they've playing these records in rotation
Avril "What The Hell"
The Script "For The First Time"
The Script "Breakeven"
One Republic "Secrets"
All American Rejects "Gives You Hell"
Train "Hey Soul Sister"

So it looks like Vegas now has 2 pure CHR/Pop outlets (KFRH 104.3 Now being the other one),

Ha! Looks like we posted at the same time. Good looking out Jay ;)

KTU is a weird addition to the Pop panel. If you look at their top 20, they are way behind the rest of the CHR reporters on a lot of songs (e.g. "DJ Got Us Falling In Love..." is #1, "Only Girl" is #2). They don't present themselves as a CHR station at all- they are very recurrent and gold based and don't even touch the biggest rock hits. They are a Rhythmic AC, and until there is a Rhythmic AC chart, they don't really belong on any panel.

^Yeah, KTU isn't really a current-based station - it's a Rhythmic Hot AC - strange how Clear Channel would let it report to the CHR panel and make it look like they're competing against themselves (Z100)

Those stations in Raleigh and Detroit play nothing but rhythmic music (same with KTU, assuming they're playing the dance remix of Adele)

Lol six months from now we're gonna have half the stations on the rhythmic panel migrating over to "CHR" - Even if a huge rock/alternative hit suddenly rocketed to #1 on the I-Tunes charts, I bet at least 30 stations on the "pop" panel wouldn't touch it

What about 102.3 Kiss FM in Albany? Is that still a Mainstream CHR though its playlist is pretty much all Rhythmic? However, they tend to play a bit of 90s music (mainly hip-hop/R&B/dance), mainly on weekends... haven't heard any rock or country song on there in a while. :)

Kiss/Albany is still a mainstream CHR. They have The Script and Christina Perri in their top 30.

I agree....I wish CBS would put WBZZ and WWMX on CHR. Even if they have some hot AC songs on them, they are much more CHR, IMO. 106.5 plays some Hot AC songs, but I think they could pass as a very pop leaning CHR (one of their most played songs is S&M for crying out loud!).

IMO, totally un-related format, but WWFS in NYC should report HAC, not AC.

Why do you repeatedly bring up this station and try to pass it off as a Rhythmic???
They have The Script, Christina Perri, Avril, etc. all in regular rotation. They are a Pop station through and through.

I know I'm beating a deadhorse but I still believe KTFM is full fledge Rhythmic. ;D
Not that anything is wrong with that, KTFM sounds great.. I just don't think they are CHR/Mainstream.

Yeah, for me, if you're not even playing F***In Perfect by Pink (which just hit #1), you're Rhythmic, any way you look at it - and for KTFM, they have TWO other mainstream CHRs their market, so of course they're not going to be mainstream (there's not enough room...)

Now 92.3/New York is also Rhythmic any way you look at it IMO...

And WDZH/Detroit - www.yes.com/#WDZH?chart

And, of course, KAMP... www.yes.com/#KAMP?chart

And lol that all three of those are owned by CBS

They seem like they're opting to only play the rhythmic material on the CHR chart. The CHR and Rhythmic CHR charts are so similar currently, that I think it may be easy to play a lot of rhythmic stuff and still be a CHR.

If I were WXRK, I would throw in a few pop songs (such as "Perfect"). Especially since WKTU is on the CHR panel now and they are definitely rhythmic "hot AC" or something. They have two CC stations after them...
