CHR/POP

I've said a couple months ago and I really think now more than ever, Pittsburgh needs a true CHR/POP station. Kiss fm is leaning way too much toward CHR/RHythmic. THere are so many more pop tunes now on the HOT 100 charts such as James Blunt-You're Beautiful, All American Rejects-Dirty Little Secret, Fall Out Boy-Dance Dance, Nickleback-Photograph, Danial Powter-Bad Day and American Idol finalists from last year Carrie Underwood-Jesus Take the Wheel and Bo Bice-THe Real thing.

Im interested to see what the ratings in Pittsburgh shows today as there are a few stations, not to mention any names that a change would do them good.

You might wanna take a close look at 93.7, because of the disaster that is the David Lee Roth morning show.

I hope that either 93.7 or 92.9 will flip to CHR/Pop.

Is 96.1 Kiss the most urban leaning CHR in the entire country?! I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case.

Other hit pop songs 96.1 Kiss is not playing (or hardly playing at all):

Everytime we Touch - Cascada
Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield
Right Here - Staind
Stupid Girls - P!nk
Ever the Same - Rob Thomas

And let's not forget there is absolutely no variety on 96.1. All of the recurrents/gold hits are urban. Yuck.

One thing that I consider fortunate for me is that I can still get WVAQ, so I'm not totally shut out of a real CHR. But seriously, Pittsburgh does need its own true CHR, and more than likely I think it's gonna show up on 93.7

Hi Dave, how are you? :)
Kiss FM Pittsburgh is definitely NOT the most Urban leaning CHR in the entire country. There are other CHRs, mainly other Clear Channel owned Kiss FM stations, that lean MORE Rhythmic:

Z-107.7 St. Louis
Channel 955 Detroit
102.7 KIIS FM Los Angeles
104.7 Kiss FM Phoenix
107.1 Kiss FM Cincinnati

Rhythmic heavy CHRs have been pretty common in California for a good 15 years now, as well as in many of the United States largest metropolitan areas.
Up until a couple of years ago Pittsburgh was "blessed" in that it always had a more balanced CHR/Pop station, but since Pittsburgh is indeed such a big market I'm not surprised the CHR nowdays leans so heavily on Rhythmic hits.

Since many of the people on this board do not represent the typical CHR listener (an 18-34 year old female who listens to the radio for a short amount of time) I wouldn't hold my breath in anticipation of a new CHR/Pop to "pop up" so quickly. The main solutions I can offer you if you're so displeased with your local CHR is to either purchase a satellite radio, or to listen online to CHR/Pop stations from all over the world (just pick a country or city and I'd be happy to help you out).

All the best,
Charles

Charles, it's hard to imagine a CHR being MORE rhythmic than WKST. :O But I've heard some nasty things about KIIS in Los Angeles from John77 on Pulse (I think he posts on here as well). The worst thing about WKST is not so much their lack of new pop songs on the playlist, but mainly the fact they do not play any recurrents/gold hits that are non-urban. Maybe once a week they'll play "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback or "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5. But that is basically it.

I have neither an iPod nor Satellite radio, but I'm seriously considering getting one of these. I'm fed up with KST. Thanks for the post,
Dave

Well said, bro.

It is a bit entertaining that everyone talks crazy smack on how homogenized radio is, yet when a station actually caters to their market and doesn't just follow a chart, everyone bastardizes them.

Interestingly enough...why does everyone even care? Everyone sure seems hung up with what people are playing and not playing.

Not EVERY record is going to work for EVERY station. And just because a record has charted, or is top 20, or whatever, doesn't make it a good record for certain stations.

Pop stands for "popular". If you've ever spent more than 10 minutes outside of your hometown, it's pretty easy to see that what's popular in Boston, may not be popular in Seattle.

Pop is defined by an audience's *definition* of pop. Period. No one in Pitt gives two $hits about any other pop station in the country. We do, because we're nerds for this kind of stuff. However, to kick and scream about how a station isn't "pop enough", first of all...doesn't make sense, but second...is exactly why some are programming, and others are not.

As a programmer, I couldn't care less about what people on this board think of how my station sounds. It's my listeners that count. Not charts. Not record reps. Not wannabes that spit out something they heard once at a convention.

Not every market is different, but few are the same.

93.7 was once chr/pop B 94. I hope it comes true, but im waiting for our Pittsburgh ratings to come out today to see if 937 K ROCK fell from the departure of Howard Stern.

It did :), let's hope our wishes, as CHR fans, come true now.

Check Your Facts

Spins this week, according to their full Mediabase playlist:

James Blunt- 16x
All American Rejects- 51x
Nickelback- 23x (over 1,000 spins to date)

Not really playing Fall Out Boy, but I wouldn't expect them to. Sugar We're Goin' Down is a bit intense for their playlist and would not sound right with some of the Rhythmic titles they play. Although, taking a second look at their spins-to-date count on that record, my initial theory is proven not totally accurate, as they have spun it 608x thus far.. certainly a recurrent, in my book, so the 10x count that they have on it right now is reasonable. Dance, Dance is a bit of a surprise.. but they might not be getting any kind of research on the song that indicates that the market really wants to hear the record, having exposed it to 154 spins to date.

Daniel Powter, as much as I personally dig the record, is not a hit (in this country, at least, not yet... it was huge in Europe). The Carrie Underwood record is a GREAT country record, but not CHR. Bo Bice is not a hit, not now, not ever.

Check your facts a tad bit closer next time before you run your mouth. Thanks.
______________

Dance does not work in PGH, so the absence of Cascada is not surprising. As I mentioned to someone above, check your facts... WKST played Natasha Bedingfield 53x last week, which is a solid B rotation record. Staind is more WXDX territory than WKST and this record is -- let's be honest -- not really their best work to date. The Pink record is a horribly testing stiff and shouldn't be on the air, period. Ever the Same is a Hot AC record, not a CHR record. It's decent, but it's not a "hit pop song" as you put it.

As far as the recurrent and gold selection... the station leans Rhythmic, so what? So do most bigger market Top 40s in the country.

I apologize and didn't mean to offend anyone. I was going by our Pittsburgh Station. I've been a radio DJ on a small alternative station but have never been in programming. My apologies to you. I saw your original post as one that wasn't showing a lot of true knowledge about what was going on with a particular radio station, which annoys me. I get a little put out when I see a bunch of posts from people saying "Oh, why doesn't station X play this, this, and this?" only to pull station X's playlist on Mediabase and see those songs in rotation. Sorry I jumped your case. I suppose "check your facts before you run your mouth" was worded a tad strong for what I was really trying to say.

Thanks for the response. Yes I do check mediabase on a regular basis and I know they are now giving "Unwritten" heavy spins. However it took them a long time to add it. ;) It takes WKST a very long time to add anything that is non urban. I can see them adding Cascada only if the song reaches Top 3 on CHR. They played DHT last year, but only for the few weeks it was No. 1 on CHR.

How do you determine on a CHR station how many times a day a song is played? Does it depend on how high it is on the Billboard or R & R Charts at the time?

Don't forget WKGS Rochester, especially with the way they burn records 120+ times a week (even 130+ at times).
______________

Clear Channel has several variations of CHR. Why they won't try their more mainstream CHR here is beyond me. Kiss has gone bust in a few markets and we can only hope in Pittsburgh that someone will flip to CHR and this KISS will go byebye too. People "in the know" can pound their fists and tout WKST as a CHR all they want but it's nowhere close. Any station still playing Bone Thugs N Harmony or N.O.R.E. is not a CHR!
