CHR-POP's aren't in these markets

CHR-POP's aren't in San Francisco & Denver & Las Vegas. In San Francisco probably KLLC Alice 97.3, they are already Adult CHR why not just shift over to Mainstream top 40 and still use the Alice name.In Denver, probably KXPK they are kind of low in the ratings. They could take Kiss 95.7's spot as top 40.Since they are a hispanic owned station that just owns spanish stations why not sell KXPK for cash to Infinity or Clear Channel or Citadel and buy more stations. In Las Vegas probably KSTJ they are low in the ratings and how long can an all 80's format last?

Gotta admit - the stations suggested here would make for some good choices for Top 40 radio in those markets. Low ratings, coupled with good signals, and an obvious format hole.

Agreed. Although in Vegas, KMXB does a great job of programming a younger HOT AC and is probably doing very well in the typical CHR demos. At the same time, KLUC is probably one of the tamer CHR-Rhythmic stations around. You might say Infinity has a great combo in KLUC & KMXB. Back to the original point, KSTJ probably could do well "playing all the hits".

As for San Fran, I've never understood why CC programs 2 CHR-Rhythmic stations. Is it a coverage area thing? I know KMEL has always been the tougher of the two but they have a lot of crossover for being under the same umbrella. Would it hurt to have WILD become a rhythmic-leaning CHR?

A lot of us have been wondering the same thing for years. While KMEL will play more pure R&B ballads, and Wild tends to be more uptempo, both stations play a LOT of the same hits, and share a lot of the same audience.
It's not much of a coverage thing - although Wild 94.9 does have a better reception in the South Bay, KMEL has much more wattage power, and both are first and foremost targeted at San Francisco-Oakland and their immediate areas.

I agree with your idea about KSTJ. Their ratings are only going to get worse now that they have a Jack competitor. The rumor is that KSTJ was considering going Jack, but Infinity beat them to it.

Beasley, who owns KSTJ, could get revenge on Infinity by flipping to CHR/Pop. It would hurt two Infinity stations Hot AC KMXB and CHR/Rhythmic KLUC. Both of these stations are being used as default mainstreams by some of their audience.

Some people here in Vegas would argue this market wont support a CHR/Pop. But I say if the format exists in 90% of the U.S there is no reason a well programmed one couldn't work here.

More CHR/POP-less markets.

Some more markets that CHR doesn't exist:

Augusta, GA: Lost Y-105/WZNY last September. Since then, nobody has stepped in to take it's place and to add insult to injury, Augusta does not even have a Hot AC so is you want to hear hit music, you have to either DX or listen to Sirus or XM!!!

Fayetteville, NC: Q-98/WQSM had went back to CHR about 6 years ago (they were Top 40 during the 80's, untill 1988 when they went AC), then for some reason they went back to being a Hot AC about 3 years ago. From 1990 to 1993 there was Mix 96/WMXF, but they went Oldies.

Asheville, NC: Although you can pick up B93.7/WFBC out of Greenville, there has not been a CHR in the market since Kiss-FM/WKSF went country over 11 years ago.

Question: Is Memphis now without a CHR/Pop? Last I've heard Q-107.5/WHBQ had or was in the process of bailing out of the format.

Re: More CHR/POP-less markets.

In Fayetteville, u can pick up G105 from Raliegh and if the CP goes through that will take G105 closer to Raliegh and it will be able to cover Fayetteville very well (as it will move closer to there too). Take a look at

Stations that have one, BUT DESPERATELY NEED A NEW OR BETTER ONE

They're playlists ARE rhythmic with a few sprinkles of rock. Of course, you can check out their playlists at http://www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/allaccess

Though, the ones that don't even have a Rhythmic/Pop station are more deserving.

Re: Stations that have one, BUT DESPERATELY NEED A NEW OR BETTER ONE

Add Jackson, MS, to the list. Y101 (WYOY) is OK, but for whatever reason, that station has never truly gelled with me. I do like the on-air personalities. I thought the former WDBT was a much better station, despite their use of voice-tracking (which I'm not a fan of).<P ID="signature">______________

And add another Jackson to that list: Michigan this time around. WKHM-FM tries to pass themselves off as a CHR/Pop, but in reality, they're an 80's/90's AC with a handful of 00's up until about three months before [insert the time and date on which you listen here]. Most of the recent pop they play is extremely light. The morning show is probably one of the lamest I've ever heard, and the rest of the "personalities" aren't much better, if at all. You can listen at www.k1053.com, but I don't know why you'd want to.

There've been discussions over on www.mibuzzboard.com as to the overall poor quality of CHR/Pop stations around Mid- and Southwest Michigan and who should flip to take on each station. It seems people aren't particularly pleased with the state of Top 40 radio in the area.
