Hey everyone... I'm running into a problem. I need help tweaking an Omnia 6-ex for a Top 40 station. We currently use the Cosmic preset with some tweaks but I'm not so sure we are on target with the tweaks. It's not very full sounding and the bass isn't very punchy. At times it sounds muddy. Does anyone have any tips for me, or better yet, some parameter examples that I could use. I want the statio to have a very full all around you sound, nice bass (punchy with a consistent but not too over the top deep rumble), with a nice presence. Clean and not too over the top. Maybe there's a preset on the Omnia that we should use instead of Cosmic.

Can anyone help a kid out?

Thanks!

Thanks! I will do so! Congrats on your 1,000th post too!

Make sure the master drive is all the way up to +6 if you're using cosmic. That trick dates back to the Tsunami presets.

Can I ask one more question regarding the presets listed on Mr. Goulds site? How do you get the preset file into the system to try it out? And... Is it better to use the analog or the digital input or does it matter if the analog signal is clean? We are using digital stls..

Hi there! I've responded to your e-mail to me, BTW...

To load in the presets, you'll have to use the Omnia remote software, which you can download here:

http://www.omniaaudio.com/o6fm/o6remote_new.htm

As far as what input to use, you can go either way....but if you are using digital STL's, I'd use the digital (AES) simply because if you don't need to do another conversion from *digital to analog*, and then *analog and digital* save yourself the extra bit of delay and conversion losses, and just go direct digital.

Certain digital STL's do something that causes digital sample rate converter chips to suddenly lock into the wrong sample rate, and cause funky sounding high end until you physically come in and do something (like remove & re-insert the AES XLR) to correct it. If you find this happening, then *ding*! you are the proud owner of one of these! In that case, the most reliable route is to go in and out analog.

I think you are talking about Moseley Starlinks. One of my stations had that same problem. The new version of the Omnia 6 motherboard is supposed to fix that. So far it seems to be working. No more going out for an Omnia reboot. BTW, an employee of Moseley admitted the problem to me a few years ago, but later took back his story when many people started to send back units for warranty repair. Moseley continues to blame the problem on Omnia.

Ahhh! Interesting.

So, I guess we're the blame for the other audio processors that this happens to as well? LOL.

You guys must have made parts for Optimods too. :D

Most equipment designed in the 90's use the same AES3 chipset from Crystal Semi.

It has the right feature set that it was very popular, but unfortunately it requires a good deal of finesse to implement without triggering weird problems.

To make matters worse, when it is not handled properly the glitches do not cause a catastrophic failure, but rather a series of notches across the spectrum.

Only in the past couple of years has there been a viable other option.
