Here's how things stacked up a couple of years later. In mid 1987 we have 97.1 The Eagle continuing its Rock lean slowly playing more Hard Rock titles as the year progresses. Kiss 106.1 sounded like a lot of CHRs in the Midwest and the South (such as Z-93 Atlanta or 92 X Columbus). In the second half of the year I bring up a playlist from Y-95 programmed by none other than Buzz Bennett. The station played a lot of the same records you'd hear on Z-100 New York or Z-95 Chicago at the time. It was a pure Pop station, though you can see the Teen Pop starting to creep in with Tiffany, Rap with both LL Cool J & The Fat Boys, and the station was acknowledging the growing popularity of Hard Rock with young females. Dance/Pop was a bit risque with George Michael's mega-hit "I Want Your Sex", and Paul Lekakis "Boom Boom Boom", which was popular on radio stations in the big cities, especially on Top 40/Dance stations like Power 96 Miami, Power 106 L.A., and Hot 103 New York.

By 1988 Y-95 and 97.1 The Eagle were truly going head to head as both stations leaned Rock for a while though Y-95 still played some big city jams like JJ Fad's "Supersonic". Y-95 quickly moved back to a true blue Top 40 playing all the hits, which you'll notice in this playlist from late 1989. The Eagle was playing a lot of Adult friendly Rock titles, not as much Hard Rock as some may remember - they played a lot more Hard Rock in 1990. So rather than sounding like L.A.'s 100.3 Pirate Radio or 99.5 The Fox in Detroit, they went with the type of Rock CHR WMMS 100.7 Cleveland was still doing at the time (shortly thereafter WMMS completely went AOR - Album Oriented Rock). And the new kid on the block was 100.3 Jamz, which in the late 80s was sounding a lot like 106 KMEL San Francisco or 95.5 PGC in Washington. It was Churban for the most part, but you still see New Kids on The Block, Technotronic, and some Freestyle in there. Rap actually wasn't too dominant on the playlist:

As promised here are some playlists from the Big D's Top 40 stations. This one's from Novem 1985 when Dallas had 97.1 The Eagle leaning on Pop/Rock hits, similar to WMMS 100.7 in Cleveland. KAYE 92.5 was playing all the hits while Kiss 106.1 was also playing all the hits, and was the most Dance/Rhythmic friendly of the bunch.

92.5 was KAFM "92 1/2 KAFM, This Week's Hits" not KAYE. Falling behind KEGL and KTKS, it flipped to KZPW "Z92.5, Your Power Station" (and then the KZPS calls a week later) February 1986. Then, soon out of the format altogether (evolving to AC by the end of the summer of '86 and then to classic hits/oldies "Classic Hits 92.5 KZPS" in the fall).

Not only old, but wondering where the listenable radio went...

I'm sure that's what folks in their 40s and 50s in 1985 were saying about the playlists above, lamenting that radio was better in the 1960s when "real music" by the Beatles and Elvis were played.

Fun thread. It's a nice trip down memory lane to see those old playlists and remember what those stations sounded like at the time.

Current playlists, of course, don't tell the whole story -- the amount of older music on each station (and how old that older music was) varied over the course of the years. But I remember that for several years, every "Eagle Free Flight" would start with an oldie. Often times, a very old oldie, since I remember hearing "Stairway to Heaven" start out at least one of those Free Flights, circa 1988.

I also remember that the Eagle wasn't above a bit of time warping -- while the Free Flights were supposed to start at five minutes before the top of the hour, they sometimes started late. But they would always give the time that the Free Flight was supposed to have started at, even if it was actually several minutes later. That was, of course, an Arbitron no-no, since it could cause a station to get credit for a quarter hour of listening that the station hadn't really earned.

I have a an aircheck scan mp3 of the dial from '87-'88 that I listen to every now and then... the NEW KSCS... Christian contemp K-O-J-O.. "K-plex" Harmon and Evans. Q-102 with Bo & Jim, Redbeard ( or "Brownbeard" as we called him cuz he butt kissing the artists he was interviewing, still loved him though). Buzz Bennett's Y-95. Wow what a station!! I had a job interview with this legend, he was very friendly with his big moustashe and cowboy hat, not what I was expecting from a CHR PD. They were slammin' it out with KEGL, a very good CHR as well. KJMZ had just come on the air from that little shack in Lake Highlands with the 4 stubbie AM sticks that were transmitting KHVN-am 970. Thats all a neighborhood now. Love the memories...
