102.5 KZIO was the heritage CHR in the market in the 80s and 90s. The station segued to Modern AC in 1994 and completely flipped formats to Modern Rock in 1996. After several rock tweaks, most recently to Classic Rock for the last few years, the station has returned to its roots as of 8/30/10 with a CHR format billed as "102.5 KDWZ." These call letters are of course very similar to the legendary KDWB in Minneapolis. Several other Duluth stations borrow their monikers from Minneapolis stations and this is another example of this. 102.5 KDWZ will directly compete with Hot AC/Adult CHR hybrid "Mix 108" which airs a lot of non-CHR songs from 90s artists in particular. From the late 90s to the latter part of the last decade, 92.1FM in the same market flirted with the CHR format but never aired a format that would be instantly recognizable as CHR with jingles, music, imaging and other elements found on nearly all other American CHR stations. 102.5 is the only frequency in the market that has aired a long-running CHR format and now the format has returned there.
