CHR STATIONS WITH A REVISIONIST HISTORY

Has anyone noticed that some CHRs play rhythmic hits now that they never played when they were actual top 40 hits and/or rhythmic hits?

KIIS barely touched any Notorious BIG back in the early/mid 90s, but now I reguarly hear "Hypnotize". The same goes with Tupac records. At the time, they really only touched "Changes" and "California Love", but played them rarely, despite Tupac being a "local" artist and obviously a big part of LA's culture in the 90s. He gets more play now than he ever did in the 90s.

Has anyone noticed a similar trend at their CHRs?

CHRs in the 90s played Modern AC hits from the 80s that they hadn't played as currents, and CHRs in the 2000s played Urban hits from the 90s that they hadn't played as currents - everytime there's a new trend in music, stations go back and retroactively play songs they would've played if their current format had been their past format

It's part of the idea that, over time, songs soften. The cutting-edge wears down.

Sublime is another example of an artist that wasn't a Top 40 darling at the time, but has found its way into CHR gold libraries.

Are you sure CHRs have Sublime in gold? I've heard What I Got on Hot ACs/Alternative/AAA, but never on a pop station...

Hot AC is probably the most notorious format for playing gold records that didn't peak very high when they originally charted (i. e. What I Got/Sublime, Mr. Jones/Counting Crows, You Oughta Know/Alanis Morissette, Pride In The Name Of Love/U2, It's The End Of The World As We Know It/R. E. M. etc.)

"Santeria" was a popular gold in the early to mid 00's. Most CHRs don't play more than one or two 90's tracks at this point, so it's not nearly as popular anymore.

Mr. Jones and You Oughta Know aren't great examples of this- Mr. Jones was a #1 Pop hit, and You Oughta Know went top 10.

You gotta read what I was wrote man - HOT AC is notorious for playing gold tracks that did not originally chart well ON HOT AC - neither Mr. Jones or You Oughta Know cracked Top 10 on the Hot AC format, yet a couple years later they were Hot AC staples

Mr. Jones was in power rotation at the peak of it's popularity on WKTI(a Hot Ac in Milwaukee)

Circa 2008, I recall "Santeria" on KIIS, KHKS and WXKS.

I have Santeria in Gold on my CHR, I played it today.

Unless you don't have a Hot AC competitor and have to tack adult for sales reasons, why would any CHR play anything from the 90's in 2012? Outside of maybe "Baby Got Back" during a mix show.....

If the CHR is competing with a high-rated Hot AC
