CHR/TOP 40 TIPS

If you read the internet streaming board, you might have seen that I need help on launching an Internet Top 40 station. I am pretty good with programming Top 40, growing up listening to KIIS FM and watching MTV since age 5.
In a few months, I am going to launch a CHR/Top 40 internet radio station for my company. My company is a social networking site that needs some new traffic, and launching this station is going to be a way to gain traffic (the station is going to be listed on iTunes). We are working with a high profile streaming company that will offer the station in a flash player on the website and on an mp3 stream for backup/iTunes support and possibly AAC encoding.
My questions for you guys is (if you can help me out):
1. What do you like in a Top 40 format?
2. Do you like personalities and would personalities work online?
3. Would adding a mixshow work out for the station?
4. Where do you hear about internet radio stations?
5. Favorite Top 40 internet radio stations?
6. Favorite songs on CHR/Top 40 radio today

Help me out any way you can! Thanks for the help!

- There would definitely be a much greater chance of me listening if there was a mix show, depending on how good the mix show is and what is played in the mix shows. I talk a lot about rhythmic and top 40 radio, but the truth is there is a completely different reason I ever got into rhythmic and top 40 radio in the first place that most people would never think of. I grew up being a fan of dance music, but most times I don't just want to hear dance music alone or one type of dance, which is where my love for rhythmic and top 40 comes in. This may be not much help to answering your questions, but a top 40 station that is also open to dance or club/bass remixes in mix shows is a top 40 station I would enjoy listening to. It's got to be better than what they currently have on satellite radio as top 40 stations. A good mixture of r&b, dance, and hip hop hits, or even a rhythmic leaning top 40 is the way to go with me. The more mixshows, the better, especially on holiday's, weekends, weeknights, etc.

- Personalities would be great of course, especially if they can be at the least just as fun and live as some of the best terrestrial radio station personalities.

- I currently have no favorite top 40 internet stations located in the U.S.

- Some of my favorite top 40 (and rhythmic) songs off the top of my head, are:
LoveGame - Lady GaGa
Birthday sex (uptempo remix) - Jeremih
Girls on the dancefloor - Fareast Movement
I know you want me - Pitbull
Knock you down - Keri Hilson
Boom boom pow - Black Eyed Peas
When love takes over - David Guetta ft Kelly Rowland
beautiful - Akon
I gotta feeling - Black Eyed Peas
sober - Pink
Battlefield - Jordin Sparks
Evacuate the dancefloor - Cascada
Jay Sean - Down
don't trust me - 30h!3
Day 'n' nite  - Kid Cudi
La La La - LMFAO
...and I'm also starting to like
That's not my name! (with rap) by Ting Tings.. and I can tolerate hearing songs by Drake and Lil Wayne.

- My favorite syndicated show? The Weekend Throwdown, and certain countdown shows by Hollywood Hamilton.

This is pretty much the basics of what I like in any top 40 station.

Thanks KDM 7000!
Actually, I made a playlist for the station currently containing 235 songs to be placed into rotation and most of them are Rhythmic leaning. Here's the playlist I have so far. I went off of what AMP Radio, Z100, NOW FM and KIIS FM are playing right now and used to play. I also added some songs that I think would work well with a CHR/Top 40. What songs should I add/remove?

I don't want to talk too much about who we're going to add for the mixshows. But DJ KConn (WFLZ) is one of the possibilities (here's his demo: http://www.djkconn.com/?page_id=13)

If anyone reading this wants to send their mixshow for audition, send me a personal message!

a decent amount of cool old school-
Biz Markie-Just A Friend,
Nitty-Nasty Girl
Knockin Boots-Candyman
...that kinda thing
plus some killer jingles & imaging.

I know! It's all about the old school, but I don't want to play TOO MANY recurrents because it is a Top 40 afterall. Also, how much rock should I put on the station? I'm a big fan of alternative, but it seems that rock isn't too popular on many Top 40 stations...

I guess you could also add "her diamonds" by Rob Thomas.

I also forgot to mention that Sunday nights or 15 minutes to an hour every week night could be used for a future flava's / new music show or mix show, featuring hot new tracks that may become hits in the future.

An old school mix show would also be appropriate, but I'm not sure which day it should be. I was thinking the new music show could be Sunday nights. As far as the back in the day show, not sure how far back you'd want to go back with music today. There was a time when playing Pebbles, Amber, Diana King, Ace of Base, Paula Abdul, Stevie B, Fine Young Cannibles, Planet Soul, UB40 etc. was acceptable for old school. I guess today you'd probably play (back in the day hits as) Sisqo, Twista, Freak Nasty, Mario, Nelly, Sonique, Daft Punk, 50 Cent, Sarah Connor, Eve, Dj Taz, Madonna, TLC, Sugar Ray, Shaggy, Blaque, Robyn, Timbaland, P!NK, Usher, ATC, Daniel Beddingfield, NSYNC, Toya, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, Mystical, Evanescence, Juvenile, Aerosmith, Lifehouse, Mikaila, Jennifer Lopez, Alice Deejay, Missy Elliott, Nivea, Gigi D'Agostino, Ja Rule, Len, Outkast, Soul Decision, Kelis, Petey Pablo, Lou Bega...etc. mixed in with a few older 90's and strong 80's hits. Not sure if Five, Take 5, N-Tyce, and Cleopatra or Jordan Knight are memorable enough... but I believe Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, and maybe even 98 Degrees, LFO, and Vitamin C are ok for top 40 old school mix show flashbacks every now and then. The macarena or who let the dogs out should be avoided as much as possible and only come occassionally when the moment is right. Eiffil 65 is better.

Oh - Stanky Legg should probably be removed!!!! But that's just me personally. Others might disagree. I'd rather play "insomnia" by Craig David, So what by P!NK, or Livvi Franc or even older Amerie or something else.

Never leave You-Lumidee
Wayne Wonder-No Letting Go
Jordan Sparks/Chris Brown-No Air
Cassie- Me & You
Goin' Crazy-Natalie
Pleasure P-Boyfriend #2
...and I forgot one thing that will make you spicier than "the other guy"...up the pitch on your slower jams about .05% & the entire station about .01 or .02%. ;)

Well I currently run a Internet Top 40 station on the 000Music network...

My mainstream CHR is strictly Mainstream CHR and just plays ALL THE HITS. We have a rhythmic station in the network as well, otherwise, I'd lean it a bit more rhythmic. I also daypart playlists/rotations based on the time of day just like FM. I try to keep it pretty current on new music as well but definitely spinning the hits.

Why would you be asking these questions here? You should be asking your audience, and programming your station to them. Assuming you're going after a female audience, which most CHR's do, this is NOT a very good place to get a proper cross-section. What we want to hear in a CHR is not relevant to your success.

Thanks for all your feedback guys!
I will post an updated playlist in a bit.
Here's another question to throw out there:
If there was a station that you listened to frequently on iTunes radio, and the station leaves the listing and starts operating on its website only, would you still follow that station? Or would you rather have the comfort of listening to it on iTunes?

To Rodger That: The whole point of my CHR is to draw attention to the company I'm working for. I just wanted to see what different audiences liked in a CHR and try to make it an overall enjoyable radio station for every audience, and it seems like the audience here has similar tastes to what is big in CHR right now. The people on these boards understand the change CHR has experienced in the past few years. And that's why I respect their opinions. Am I going to take every song suggestion? No. But with a lot of the suggestions and ideas that I've been given on this thread really reopened my eyes to music that would be popular with the listeners of this station.

Your intentions are good. But you asked for advice. And mine is to ask your audience. And the audience for a good CHR should NOT be a message board for radio nerds and wannabes.

This is the same group that argues when a station is listed as a CHR/Pop when they "play too much rhythmic music." The actual audience that listens to the station DOES NOT CARE. To them it's pop music, period. They don't have the same stupid definitions that we in radio do.

If you want to be a great new radio station, the LAST thing you should do is fill it with the advice of radio people. To me, it would be like asking a career newspaper person to design your website. Until we radio people fix the product, across the board, we shouldn't be ones to talk.

You can't be all things to all people. You have to pick your target, and then program to them. Teen-aged to Middle-aged guys, which you'll find an abundance of here, are not likely it.

Again...you asked for advice. I've left you with mine. Good luck with your station, though I'm sure your audience would appreciate it more if it were something more than an advertising tool for your company (though that would fit in with most radio today). But again, that's silly me, wishing for something that the audience loves, even if we don't.

I think anyone should just get feedback from everyone, regardless of who or where they are, then take what they wish from the info they've gained to produce the outcome they desire to achieve. After all, people may work or be part of many different businesses in or outside of radio, but pretty much everybody is an audience listener of radio, many times including yourself and even your coworkers. Therefore, I'd get listener/audience suggestions and feedback from all sources possible, because it's most likely, anywhere you go, a (future) member of your audience could be there, too.

To: Roger That... he's trying to get a new audience. And asking people here isn't necessarily bad. But you can't let people's personal opinions count... only their professional opinions. Not everyone here is in the biz. Some are 15 yr old kids.

To: RadioMojo

Rock isn't bad at all. There just isn't a lot of CHR friendly rock recently. But Shinedown, Jason Mraz, Nickelback, The Fray... all great.

Drop these though. No place on a CHR's regular rotation...

Get rid of all those.

Remember, you can't just program a CHR and leave it alone. You'll have to add songs every 2 weeks minimum. And you can't leave songs in forever. Some songs were BIG hits, but no one wants to hear them anymore.

You could drop many of those songs if you desire to, but then this would make it almost pointless to run an internet top 40 station when terrestrial radio would be playing more hits, if you dropped all of those.

Some of those belong in mix show play, while many are to be fillers or recurrents.

There are a few that COULD be dropped, but remember internet radio should be more than what terrestrial (and even satellite) radio has to offer. There should be no regional action going on here unless you are catering to a specific area, and (a U.S. based) internet top 40 radio should cover ALL the (U.S.) hits (recurrent and currents), nationwide.

That was my point. Show me a female that's between 18 and 34 on this board, and I'll change my tune.

You think successful terrestrial CHR stations play MORE records than was on this list originally? Guess this post proves my point, as well.

104.7 Kiss FM seems pretty successful to me...
B96 WBBM (which in my opinion is better musically) seems pretty successful...... and I'll just stop there.

Without getting into a full, precise explanation, I'll just say I hear many of these on the brief summary of stations I've listed above. Whether it be in mix shows, specialty shows, or recurrent play, doesn't matter because I did cover all that in my previous post. I never once said anything about speaking specifically only about the main playlist.

It might seem like a lot, but many of those songs are and still are being played from time to time on rhythmic top 40's, and do belong on a top 40 station that leans rhythmic, as he stated this station would be doing musically as well. The list are songs that should be played on rhythmic top 40. Whether certain songs be played every day or once every two weeks, during whatever time or for whatever reason, the bottom line is that it is being played.

In the B96 case, I assume by "successful" you mean "is still in the format." Last time I checked, they were getting beat pretty soundly. But I digress...

You say "play the hits," which I wholeheartedly agree with. However, I say, "show me how these are hits." Are there some in there? Definitely. But it's not the majority as you would suggest.

As for mixshows and specialty shows, they're exactly that: specialty programming that lends more to image than actual listening. Just because you heard one of those records above in a random mixshow doesn't mean it belongs on a start up radio station.

..Ok B96 is a bad example because I forgot they were not always top 40... but I use that more as an example of good variety that many top 40 stations fail to provide.

Since we're talking about top 40, I am talking about the station as a whole, including every type of show or specialty show that could be featured on there. It would only make sense to talk about everything as a whole because if I don't, then what am I going to say or suggest musically for a top 40 station, when it's already known that a top 40 station plays top 40 hits? I believe the music suggestions being requested are more than what the general playlist should consist of, and this means including and keeping other things in consideration in addition to the regular playlist.

All of them may not be current hits, but many are considered past hits today. Many are not nationwide hits, but some of them are blowing up like a molotov cocktail in certain regions of the U.S. Maybe some of the songs don't belong on the start up station (as regular playlist hits), but again, remember I'm talking about the station as a whole, meaning everything. Therefore, there has to be a time and place for a majority of those songs when you look at everything as a whole.

Also remember that this is internet, not terrestrial radio.... Keeping an internet station safe may be ok for those places that have no real top 40 station, but why go to internet for something you could easily get on terrestrial radio, pretty much everywhere?

However, I do see some things on the list that could be removed for good, in all cases.
