CHR Tower 98-3 Toledo flips

To Adult AC MY 98-3. Believe it happened yesterday (Thurs 9-30-10)

Station to serve Monroe MI market as opposed to Toledo, which it was trying to do for years. Allegedly station to move to downtown Monroe.

It happened today according to Wikipedia. Can't believe this! I bet KISS is jumping for sure. Keep in mind though, Cumulus also has Star 105.5... you could see them dropping the 80s programming and becoming more of a "today's hits without the rap" station very soon. Tower had its run though... crazy!

The Tower site now redirects to "My 98.3", with LOTS of Monroe references.

Chuck, hasn't Tower been trying to market to Monroe already, though with studios still at Cumulus Toledo?

Of course, Monroe already has an AC station...49 watt WYDM/97.5 "Dream 97-5", licensed to the Monroe school district and run out of the high school by Monroe County Community College students...

So, technically it was smart, because Tower wasn't able to KISS. They did from 06-07... they shouldn't have leaned so adult. That's what I believe hurt them the most.

As Scott Fybush pointed out to me tonight, it's interesting that 98.3 continues to target Monroe after moving its stick to the tower farm east of Toledo...

Listening to "My 98.3" now via its stream, with John Tesh doing liners for "Monroe's hometown radio station".

I've heard "Dream"...it's pretty professional sounding for a low-watt school-owned/student-run station. It's supposedly guided by a former Detroit market radio guy...

Well, that tower (no pun intended) is pretty huge for 98.3 - I suppose this could really work in their favor.

Not really. 98.3 started life in Monroe itself. It moved south (new COL Luna Pier MI) in an attempt to move into Toledo. Which...it later abandoned, and is now apparently back north (marketing-wise) permanently.

I can't remember tuning to Tower last time I was up there, but they probably still have an OK signal in Monroe. It's just not actually THERE as it used to be.

WOW! Kinda suprised to see them give up their heritage image, ofcourse after their current owners took over the station went down hill.. I remember the days (early 90s) they had a great sound and were local in Monroe before moving to Toledo.

Thru much of the early 2000's, they were aggressively marketing to be a Toledo station on the air. I believe it was 2004 when the signal move finally happened. They were very Rhythmic for a few years as "The Beat of Toledo"

It was Fall 2005 and Winter 2006 when they knocked off WVKS in the 18-34 cell. Kiss released morning man Johny D and released him from his non-compete. Tower 98 (added the ".3" at that time) snatched him right up. At the same time, Kiss added some Hot AC gold during the day, like Sugar Ray, Uncle Kracker, Matchbox 20. It was a perfect combination for a Tower victory.

Jan Jeffries released the PD in the summer of 2006 and pushed the music to be more in line with every other Cumulus CHR (rap is bad). Kiss ditched the gold. Tower has been doomed ever since.

Those in the market - how is "My" compared to Star, musically? Though 98.3 indeed markets to Monroe, the moved stick still makes it an in-market competitor to its sister station.

thank god! Gawd station was LAME! Also nice they bagged Kidd Kraddic, gawd that show sucks.

As for 105.5, time for a new name(star sounds so 1990), I could see them sounding alot like WDVD out of Detroit. My guess is Weekend 80's moves to 98.3.

How about taking the "M105" name? After all, that was what the WWWM calls were most famous for here in Cleveland... ;)

To play devil's advocate M105 doesn't mean anything to those in Toledo. Even to those in Cleveland, under 40, M105 doesn't mean much. It was an also ran, like most, to WMMS.
